This calculator estimates what pet insurance is likely to cost for your dog or cat in New Zealand, using 2026 rates from providers including Southern Cross, PD Insurance, AA, Petcover, Tower, Cove, SPCA Pet Insurance and Pet-n-Sur. You enter your pet type and age, and for dogs a breed risk category ranging from low risk breeds like Whippets to high risk breeds like French Bulldogs and giant breeds like Great Danes, since breed strongly affects premium. You then choose a cover level (accident only, mid-range, or comprehensive), a co-payment percentage, and an annual benefit limit up to $25,000. The calculator returns your estimated monthly premium, annual premium, and lifetime cost over 10 years at typical premium growth, with a breakdown showing how the base rate is adjusted by breed risk, co-payment, and annual limit factors, plus a weekly equivalent. It also compares your choices against NZ pet health statistics, such as the SPCA's average vet visit costs and how often dogs and cats need veterinary care each year, and gives a short assessment flagging things like an annual limit that may be too low, or the extra cost of a 0% co-payment plan. Use it to compare cover levels and providers before you commit. These are indicative estimates only; get personalised quotes from insurers for exact pricing based on your pet's health history.
Pet insurance pays eligible vet bills when your dog or cat is injured or becomes ill. You pay a monthly premium, then when you visit the vet you either pay the full bill and claim reimbursement, or (with Southern Cross Pet Easy-Claim at 200+ participating vets) the insurer pays the vet directly and you only pay your portion (excess + co-payment).
| Level | Covers | Typical Monthly (young dog) |
|---|---|---|
| Accident only | Injuries from accidents (broken bones, lacerations, poisoning) | $16-$30 |
| Mid-range | Accidents + illness (infections, allergies, cancer, diabetes) | $35-$85 |
| Comprehensive | Above + dental, cruciate, hereditary conditions, some behavioural | $46-$130+ |
Breed significantly affects dog insurance premiums. Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have 30-40% higher premiums due to respiratory, eye, and spinal conditions. Giant breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs) carry 40-50% loadings due to shorter lifespans and higher rates of hip dysplasia, bloat, and cardiac conditions. Cat breeds are less differentiated, though pedigree cats (Ragdoll, Bengal, British Shorthair) may attract modest loadings.
Most NZ pet insurers apply a co-payment (typically 20%) meaning you pay a percentage of every bill on top of the excess. On a $5,000 surgery with $250 excess and 20% co-payment, you pay $250 + 20% of $4,750 = $1,200 and the insurer pays $3,800. PD Insurance is the only NZ provider offering 0% co-payment on all plans. This costs about 30% more in premium but means you pay only the excess per claim.
