Paracetamol Dosage Calculator

This calculator gives a general, weight-based guide to paracetamol dosing for New Zealand, showing an estimated single dose and the maximum amount in 24 hours from a person's body weight. Paracetamol, sold as Pamol, Panadol and many other brands, is the most common pain and fever medicine in Kiwi homes, and because it is dosed by body weight rather than age, weight is the more reliable basis, especially for children. The widely used guide is about 15 milligrams of paracetamol for every kilogram of body weight per dose, given no more often than every four to six hours, with no more than four doses in any 24 hour period. A single dose is capped at 1000 milligrams and the daily total at 4000 milligrams for adults and larger children. The calculator applies these figures to the weight you enter and also converts the dose into millilitres for a common 250 mg in 5 mL liquid, since that is how children's paracetamol is usually given. This is important information to get right, because taking more than the maximum, or doubling up on different products that both contain paracetamol, can cause serious liver harm even when the person feels fine. This tool is general information only and is not a substitute for the product label or professional advice. Always read the label and check with a pharmacist or doctor.

Important: This is general information, not medical advice. Always follow the dose on the product label and check with a pharmacist or doctor, as strengths differ. Do not give paracetamol to babies under 1 month, and seek advice before dosing infants under 3 months. Never exceed 4 doses in 24 hours or the daily maximum, and do not combine products that both contain paracetamol. Free advice: Healthline 0800 611 116, PlunketLine 0800 933 922. How it works

The calculator multiplies body weight by 15 milligrams to estimate a single dose, capping it at 1000 milligrams. The 24 hour maximum is the lower of 60 milligrams per kilogram or 4000 milligrams. It converts the dose to millilitres using the chosen liquid strength, where 250 mg in 5 mL is 50 mg per mL.

Worked example

For a 20 kg child, a single dose is about 20 times 15, which is 300 milligrams, or 6 mL of 250 mg in 5 mL liquid. The daily maximum is the lower of 20 times 60, which is 1200 milligrams, or 4000, so 1200 milligrams across up to four doses.
