Income Tax Calculator NZ 2026

Quick answer: New Zealand income tax for 2026/27 is 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, and 39% above $180,000. Your effective rate is total tax divided by income. See the full income tax by bracket table, or enter your income below.

This income tax calculator works out how much tax and other deductions come out of your pay in New Zealand, using the 2026/27 IRD tax brackets, so you know what you actually take home from a given salary. Enter your gross income, choose whether that figure is weekly, fortnightly, monthly or annual, tell it whether you are enrolled in KiwiSaver and, if so, your contribution rate of 3%, 3.5%, 4%, 6%, 8% or 10%, and whether you have a student loan. Press Calculate and it applies the progressive brackets, 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000 and 39% above that, along with the 1.75% ACC earner levy, your KiwiSaver contribution and, where it applies, the 12% student loan repayment above the $24,128 threshold. The results break the deductions down separately into PAYE tax, ACC levy, KiwiSaver and student loan, plus a combined total deductions figure for the year. Use it to check a payslip, compare take-home pay across different salary levels, or see how lifting your KiwiSaver rate or clearing a student loan changes your annual deductions. If you want to see your actual take-home pay once these deductions are subtracted, use our PAYE calculator instead. Figures are indicative estimates based on current settings and do not allow for tax codes, other allowances or secondary income.

How to calculate income tax in New Zealand

  1. Take your taxable income. Start with your gross taxable income for the year.
  2. Apply each bracket in turn. Tax the first $15,600 at 10.5%, income to $53,500 at 17.5%, to $78,100 at 30%, to $180,000 at 33%, and anything above at 39%.
  3. Add the bracket amounts. Add the tax from each bracket to get your total income tax.
  4. Find your effective rate. Divide total tax by income for your effective rate; the rate on your last dollar is your marginal rate.
