Rent Affordability Calculator NZ 2026
This rent affordability calculator shows you how much rent you can comfortably afford each week, based on your gross annual income before tax. It works out four rent budgets, labelled conservative (15% of income), safe (20%), standard (25%) and aggressive (30%), so you can see how your weekly rent changes as you take on more housing risk. Enter your total annual income before tax, and it instantly returns, for each of the four levels, your suggested weekly rent, an estimated weekly utilities cost (around 20% of rent, covering power, water and other bills), your maximum housing expense (rent plus utilities combined), and a savings target to move out, based on four weeks' rent, the bond and rent in advance most New Zealand landlords and agents ask for before you sign a lease. The lower bands leave more of your income free for savings, debt repayment and emergencies, while the higher bands stretch your budget further but leave less buffer if your circumstances change. Use this tool when house hunting or budgeting for a move, to check whether a listed rent fits comfortably within your income, and to work out how much you need saved before moving day. These figures are general guidelines based on common budgeting rules of thumb, not financial advice, so weigh them against your own expenses, debts and lifestyle before committing to a lease.
