Superannuation Calculator

Quick answer NZ Super starts at age 65 and is not means-tested: your KiwiSaver and other income do not reduce it. Rates are set each 1 April by household situation, and this projects what it covers against your expected spending.

Introducing our New Zealand Superannuation Calculator, a powerful tool designed to help you plan for a secure and comfortable retirement. This calculator takes into account a range of parameters including your current age, retirement age, current salary, annual salary growth, current superannuation balance, and both employee and employer contribution rates. It also factors in the potential investment return and inflation rate to provide a comprehensive view of your financial future.

The calculator's primary function is to estimate the amount of superannuation you will have accumulated by your chosen retirement age. By inputting your current salary and projecting its growth over time, along with your current superannuation balance and the contribution rates from both you and your employer, the calculator can forecast the growth of your superannuation fund. The inclusion of investment return and inflation rate parameters allows for a more accurate and realistic projection.

This tool is invaluable for individuals at any stage of their career, whether you're just starting out, in the middle of your career, or nearing retirement. It allows you to see the impact of different variables on your retirement savings, helping you make informed decisions about your financial future. By understanding how your superannuation balance could grow over time, you can plan effectively, adjust your savings strategy if necessary, and work towards your retirement goals with confidence.

Our New Zealand Superannuation Calculator is a step towards taking control of your retirement planning, providing clarity and peace of mind for your financial future.

One thing to be clear on before you start: this tool projects the savings you build up yourself, in a KiwiSaver account or any other retirement fund. It does not work out your New Zealand Superannuation entitlement, which is the government pension paid from age 65 and is set by your living situation rather than by what you have saved. The current rates are set out below, and the NZ Super rate calculator breaks them down by fortnight, week and year.

How NZ Super fits into the picture

New Zealand Superannuation is paid from age 65 to people who meet the residence rules, and it is paid on top of whatever you have saved. The balance this calculator projects is money in addition to NZ Super, not instead of it. From 1 April 2026 the net rates on the M tax code are $1,110.30 a fortnight for a single person living alone, which works out to $28,867.80 a year; $1,024.90 a fortnight for a single person sharing a home, which is $26,647.40 a year; and $854.08 a fortnight each where both partners qualify, which is $1,708.16 a fortnight or $44,412.16 a year for the couple. Rates are reviewed every 1 April and the amount in your hand changes if you use a different tax code or have other income. Source: Work and Income, NZ Super rates from 1 April 2026.

What the projection includes

Each year the calculator grows your salary by the growth rate you enter, adds your own contribution at the rate you set, adds the employer contribution, adds the KiwiSaver government contribution where you qualify for it, applies the investment return, then divides the balance by the inflation rate so the answer is shown in today's dollars. The government contribution is 25 cents for every $1 you contribute yourself, capped at $260.72 a year, which takes $1,042.86 of your own contributions in the year to reach in full. From 1 July 2025 it is not paid where income is over $180,000, so the projection drops it in any year your salary is above that threshold. Results are estimates for planning only and are not financial advice.
