Tip Calculator

This calculator works out the tip on a bill and splits the total evenly between everyone at the table, so you are not doing the maths in your head or arguing over who owes what. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage, and set how many people are sharing the cost, and the results update instantly as you change any figure. You get three outputs: the tip amount in dollars, the total bill once the tip is added, and the amount each person pays when the total is split evenly across the group. This is useful whether you are rounding up for great service, working out gratuity somewhere tipping is expected while travelling, or dividing a shared restaurant, cafe or takeaway bill fairly between friends or colleagues. Tipping is not standard practice in New Zealand, since hospitality staff are paid at least the minimum wage, so leaving anything extra here is optional and up to you. Because the calculator recalculates live, it is easy to compare scenarios, such as seeing how the per-person amount changes if you leave 10% instead of 15%, or if two more people join the table. It suits quick, everyday use rather than formal accounting, so use it to settle the bill on the spot, plan ahead for a group outing, or check that an even split adds up correctly before everyone pays their share.

How it works

The tip is the bill times the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip. Splitting divides the total equally by the number of people. Everything updates as you type, so you can try different tip levels or group sizes instantly.

Worked example

A $120 bill with a 10% tip adds $12, for a $132 total. Split between 4 people, that is $33 each. Drop the tip to 0% and each person pays $30.
