Mortgage Repayment Frequency Calculator

This calculator shows New Zealand homeowners how much they can save by switching how often they pay their mortgage, from monthly to accelerated fortnightly or weekly, without borrowing less or finding extra cash. Enter your loan amount, interest rate and term, and the tool works out your standard monthly repayment, then models paying half of it every fortnight or a quarter every week. Because a year holds 26 fortnights and 52 weeks, those add up to the equivalent of 13 monthly payments instead of 12, with the extra amount going straight onto the principal. The result is a highlighted interest saving from switching to accelerated fortnightly payments, plus a full breakdown table comparing monthly, fortnightly and weekly options side by side, showing each payment amount, the total interest charged over the life of the loan, and how long it takes to pay off. For example, a $600,000 loan over 30 years at 6.5% clears about six years early and saves roughly $176,000 in interest by paying fortnightly rather than monthly. Adjust the figures to match your own mortgage to see your likely saving, and check with your lender that fortnightly or weekly payments are set at the accelerated amount rather than simply the monthly figure spread out, since that alone delivers no extra saving. This is an estimate based on a standard table loan, not financial advice.

Accelerated fortnightly and weekly use half and a quarter of the monthly payment, so you make the equivalent of 13 monthly payments a year instead of 12. Check your lender allows this without simply spreading the monthly amount. Estimate only, on a table loan, not financial advice.

How it works

The calculator finds the standard monthly repayment on your loan, then models paying half that amount every fortnight and a quarter every week. Because there are 26 fortnights and 52 weeks in a year, those add up to 13 monthly payments worth a year rather than 12. That extra payment goes straight onto the principal, so interest is charged on a smaller balance and the loan clears sooner, saving interest overall.

Worked example

A $600,000 loan over 30 years at 6.5% costs about $3,792 a month. Paying $1,896 every fortnight instead adds roughly one extra monthly payment a year, clearing the loan around six years early and saving about $176,000 in interest, all without a large lift in outgoings.
