Flatmate Rent Split Calculator

This calculator splits rent and shared household bills fairly between flatmates, with the option to charge a little extra for a larger room, ensuite or master bedroom rather than dividing everything equally, which is often the fairest way to set up a flat. You enter the total weekly rent, the shared weekly bills such as power, internet and water, the number of flatmates in the house, and any premium the main room should pay on top of an equal share. The calculator takes that premium off the total rent, splits what remains equally among everyone, then adds the premium back onto the main room occupant, and splits the shared bills evenly across all flatmates. It returns what each other flatmate pays per week covering both rent and bills, what the main room occupant pays, and the total weekly amount collected from the whole flat, so you can check the numbers add up before anyone hands over money. Set the premium to zero if you would rather split everything completely equally. Use the result to agree a clear weekly figure for each person, write it down before move-in day, and revisit it whenever the flat composition or the rent changes. A transparent, written split like this is one of the simplest ways to avoid the money disputes that flatting arrangements are prone to.

The premium for the main room is added to that person rent share, with the rest of the rent split equally among everyone, and bills split equally. Set the premium to zero for a fully equal split. Agree the split in advance and write it down.

How it works

The calculator takes the premium for the main room off the rent, splits the remaining rent equally among all flatmates, then adds the premium back to the main room occupant. Shared bills are split equally on top. The result is a fair weekly figure for the main room and for everyone else, which is easy to show the flat so nobody feels the split is arbitrary.

Worked example

On $800 rent and $120 bills between 4 flatmates, with $40 extra for the main room, the remaining $760 of rent splits to $190 each. The main room occupant pays $190 plus $40, plus their $30 bills share, about $260. The other three pay $190 plus $30, about $220 each.
