This calculator estimates what your car insurance is likely to cost in New Zealand, based on the vehicle you drive, the cover you choose and your own driving profile. You enter your vehicle's value, choose a cover type (comprehensive, third party fire and theft, or third party only), then add the youngest regular driver's age, your location, your preferred excess and how many claim-free years you have built up. It returns your estimated annual premium, the equivalent monthly cost, and that premium as a percentage of your vehicle's value, plus a breakdown showing fortnightly and weekly equivalents and how the base premium is adjusted by driver age, location, excess and your no-claims discount. It also gives a plain-English assessment, flagging things such as whether third party only leaves a valuable vehicle underinsured, or whether a young driver could benefit from a named-driver policy. Because car insurance is not compulsory in New Zealand and ACC does not cover vehicle or property damage, knowing your likely premium helps you weigh cover against the risk of being personally liable for an at-fault accident. Rates are calibrated against published pricing from insurers including AA Insurance, Tower, AMI, State and Vero. Treat the results as an indicative guide only, since your actual premium depends on your vehicle's make and model, driving history and each insurer's underwriting, so get personalised quotes before you commit.
Car insurance is not legally required in NZ, but it is strongly recommended. ACC covers personal injury from motor vehicle accidents (funded by levies on fuel and vehicle registration), but ACC does NOT cover vehicle damage, property damage you cause to others, or your own vehicle damage. If you cause an accident and are uninsured, you are personally liable for all damage, which can easily reach $20,000-$100,000+ for vehicle and property damage.

| Third Party, Fire and Theft | No (except fire/theft) | Yes | Yes | Mid-value vehicles ($3,000-$10,000) |
