This calculator gives you a quick, indicative estimate of what travel insurance is likely to cost from New Zealand, based on 2026 pricing patterns from Southern Cross Travel Insurance, Cover-More, Allianz Partners, 1Cover and World Nomads. You choose your destination, from Australia and the Pacific through to the USA or a worldwide multi-destination trip, how many days you are away, the age of the oldest traveller, your cover level (medical only, comprehensive, or comprehensive plus), whether you are travelling solo, as a couple or as a family, and whether you need cover for adventure activities such as skiing, diving or bungy jumping. The calculator returns your estimated premium per person, the total policy cost for everyone travelling, and a cost per day, plus a full breakdown showing how the base rate is adjusted by destination, age, cover type and any adventure loading, alongside typical cover limits for medical expenses, cancellation, luggage and liability. An assessment box flags things worth checking, such as needing higher medical cover for the USA, the gaps in medical-only policies, or whether an annual multi-trip policy might suit frequent travel. Use it to compare cover levels and see how destination, age and trip length shift the price before you request quotes. Figures are indicative only; your actual premium depends on the insurer, your health, and policy terms, so always get a personalised quote before you travel.
New Zealanders travel extensively, and medical emergencies overseas can be devastatingly expensive without insurance. A hospital admission in the USA can cost $10,000-$50,000+. Medical evacuation back to NZ costs $50,000-$150,000+. Even in Australia, the reciprocal health agreement does NOT cover ambulance costs ($1,000-$5,000+ in most states), medical evacuation, or non-emergency specialist care.
| Destination | Premium Impact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Australia / Pacific | 15% cheaper | Proximity, reciprocal agreements (limited) |
| Europe / UK | Baseline | Standard medical costs, good infrastructure |
| USA | 30-40% more | Extremely high medical costs ($10K-$500K+) |
| Domestic NZ | 60% cheaper | ACC covers accidents, public health system |
Premium credit cards from ANZ, ASB, Westpac, and BNZ may include travel insurance as a cardholder benefit. However, cover is typically activated only when you purchase travel using the eligible card, medical limits are often capped at $500K-$1M (vs unlimited on standalone comprehensive), and cancellation limits may be tied to what was charged to the card. Read the card PDS carefully before relying on it as your sole travel insurance.
