This calculator works out your pro-rata salary in New Zealand, turning a full-time salary into the pay you actually receive for part-time hours. Pro-rata simply means in proportion: if a role is advertised at a full-time salary but you work fewer hours, you are paid the same hourly rate for the share of full-time hours you do. Knowing the pro-rata figure matters whenever a job ad quotes a full-time equivalent (FTE) salary, when you move from full-time to part-time, when you return from parental leave on reduced hours, or when you are comparing two part-time offers fairly. You enter the full-time salary, the hours that count as full-time for that role, usually 37.5 or 40 a week, and the hours you will actually work. The calculator returns your pro-rata annual salary, then breaks it down to monthly, fortnightly and weekly pay, and shows the underlying hourly rate so you can check the part-time role pays the same per hour as the full-time version. Because your total earnings are lower than the full-time salary, your PAYE income tax and overall average tax rate will usually be lower too, though the calculator shows gross pay before tax. To see your take-home pay after PAYE, the ACC levy, KiwiSaver and any student loan, run the figure through the PAYE calculator. The result here is an estimate to help you plan and compare offers, not a payslip or a contract of employment.
Gross pay before tax. For take-home pay after PAYE, ACC, KiwiSaver and student loan, use the PAYE calculator. An estimate for planning only.
Your share of full-time is your hours divided by the full-time hours for the role. The pro-rata annual salary is the full-time salary multiplied by that share. The hourly rate is the full-time salary divided by the full-time hours across the year (full-time hours times 52 weeks), and it does not change when you go part-time. The monthly, fortnightly and weekly figures are the annual pro-rata salary divided by 12, 26 and 52.
A role pays $70,000 for a 40 hour week. You will work 24 hours. Your share of full-time is 24 divided by 40, which is 60 percent. Your pro-rata salary is $70,000 times 0.60, or $42,000 a year. The hourly rate is $70,000 divided by 2,080 hours, about $33.65 an hour, the same as the full-time role. That is $3,500 a month, $1,615 a fortnight and about $808 a week before tax.
