Pet Food Cost Calculator NZ
This calculator works out how much your pet's food costs per day, month and year in New Zealand, from the amount you feed each day and the price per kilogram. Food is one of the steadiest ongoing costs of owning a pet, and while a single bag does not seem like much, fed day after day it adds up to a meaningful slice of the household budget, especially with multiple pets or a large dog. Seeing the yearly figure puts it in perspective and, just as usefully, lets you compare foods fairly: a cheap-looking bag that has to be fed in larger amounts can quietly cost more over a year than a pricier, more concentrated food, and the only way to know is to compare the cost per day. You enter the grams of food fed each day, the price per kilogram, and the number of pets eating that food, and the calculator returns the daily, monthly and yearly cost. Use the feeding guide on the pack for your pet's weight, or simply weigh what you measure out. If you feed both wet and dry food, work each out separately and add them, since they differ in both price and feeding amount. A simple way to budget for your pets and compare foods on what really matters, the cost to actually feed them.
Covers food only, not vet care, insurance or other costs. Compare foods on cost per day, not pack price. An estimate for budgeting.
How it works
The daily cost is the grams fed per day divided by 1,000 to get kilograms, times the price per kilogram, times the number of pets. The monthly cost is the daily cost times about 30.4 days, and the yearly cost is the daily cost times 365.
Worked example
Feeding 300 grams a day at 8 dollars a kilogram for one pet is 2.40 dollars a day, about 73 dollars a month, or roughly 876 dollars a year.
