Words to Pages Calculator

This calculator converts a word count into an estimated number of pages for an essay, assignment or report, based on the line spacing you choose, so you can plan how long a piece of writing will run. Students and writers constantly need to translate between words and pages, whether a brief sets a page limit but you think in words, or you have a word target and want to know how many pages it will fill. The rough rule most people use is about five hundred words to a single-spaced page and two hundred and fifty words to a double-spaced page, in a standard twelve point font, with double spacing fitting about half as many lines on a page as single. You enter your word count and pick the spacing, single, one-and-a-half or double, and the calculator returns the estimated number of pages. Use it to check an assignment that specifies a page count against your word total, to plan the length of a report, or to see how switching to double spacing, as many courses require, changes the page count. Bear in mind it is an estimate: headings, paragraph breaks, images, font choice and margins all shift the real figure, so confirm against the actual document before you rely on it. A quick words-to-pages guide for your writing.

How it works

The number of pages is the word count divided by the words per page for your chosen spacing: about 500 single-spaced, 375 for one-and-a-half, and 250 double-spaced. The read-aloud figure divides the words by roughly 140 words a minute, handy if the writing is for speaking.

Worked example

A 3,000 word essay single-spaced at 500 words a page is about 6 pages. Double-spaced at 250 words a page, the same essay would run to about 12 pages.
