This calculator estimates your FamilyBoost childcare rebate in New Zealand from your early childhood education fees and your household income, applying the income taper that reduces the rebate for higher earners. FamilyBoost was introduced to ease the cost of early childhood education for working families, refunding a share of your ECE fees, which you claim back from Inland Revenue each quarter by submitting your childcare invoices. The rebate is a percentage of your fees up to a quarterly cap, so families paying higher fees get more, but only to the cap, and the rebate then tapers away once household income climbs past one hundred and forty thousand dollars, reaching nil by one hundred and eighty thousand. You enter your weekly childcare fees, your household income, and the current rebate rate and annual cap, and the calculator estimates your rebate per year, per quarter and per week, after any income taper. Use it to see roughly what you can claim and to factor the rebate into your childcare budget. The rate, cap and thresholds have changed since the scheme launched and may change again, so the inputs are editable and you should confirm the current settings on the IRD website before relying on the figure. This is an estimate only and general information, not tax advice.
Rebate is a share of fees up to the cap, tapering from $140,000 to nil at $180,000 of household income. Settings change; confirm current figures with IRD. Estimate only.
The base rebate is your annual fees (weekly fees times 52) multiplied by the rebate rate, capped at the annual cap. If household income is above 140,000 dollars, the rebate is reduced in proportion to how far income has risen toward 180,000 dollars, reaching zero at that point. The result is shown per year, per quarter and per week.
At 250 dollars a week, annual fees are 13,000 dollars. A 40 percent rebate is 5,200 dollars, under the cap, and with household income of 120,000 dollars there is no taper, so the rebate is about 5,200 dollars a year, 1,300 a quarter or 100 a week.
