Gym Cost Calculator NZ

This calculator works out what you are really paying for each gym visit in New Zealand, then compares that ongoing membership against a one-off home setup over time. You enter your membership fee per week, how often you go each week, the upfront cost of a comparable home setup, and the number of years you want to compare over. It returns your real cost per visit, the total you would pay for gym membership over the chosen period, the total cost of the home setup over the same period, and a verdict showing which option is cheaper. Your weekly fee is turned into a yearly cost, then divided by your yearly visit count to reveal the true price of each session, while the home setup is treated as a single upfront cost that does not grow over time. A membership that looks cheap on paper can work out expensive per visit if you rarely go, while a home setup with a higher upfront cost can pay for itself within a year or two of consistent use. Use it to check whether your membership is good value, decide whether home training makes financial sense, or see how many more visits you need to make the gym worthwhile. A gym also offers equipment variety, classes and social motivation a home setup cannot replace.

A gym offers more equipment and classes; a home setup suits consistent solo training. The right choice is about how and how often you train, not cost alone. Estimate only.

How it works

The calculator turns your weekly membership into a yearly and per-visit cost, dividing the yearly fee by the visits you make to show what each session really costs. It then totals the membership over the comparison period and sets it against the one-off cost of a home setup, so you can see which is cheaper over a few years. A home setup is a fixed cost; the gym keeps charging whether you go or not.

Worked example

A $22 a week membership is about $1,144 a year. Going twice a week, 104 times a year, that is about $11 a visit. Over 3 years the membership costs around $3,432, while a $1,500 home setup is a one-off, so the home setup is cheaper over that period if you use it.
