This calculator works out the average, or mean, of any list of numbers you give it, whether that is test scores, monthly expenses, sale prices, or measurements from a project. The mean is one of the most useful summary statistics you can produce because it condenses a whole spread of figures into a single representative number, making it easier to compare, budget, or report on. You type or paste your values into the box, separating each one with a comma, a space, or a new line, and the tool updates instantly as you type, with no submit button to press. It accepts decimals and negative numbers, so it suits exam marks, temperature readings, or profit and loss figures alike. As soon as you enter your numbers, the calculator returns the mean front and centre, along with four supporting figures: the sum of all the values, the count of how many numbers you entered, and the smallest and largest values in the list. Together these give you a fuller picture than the average alone, showing the total you are working with and the spread between your lowest and highest figures. Keep in mind the mean can be skewed by a single very high or low outlier, so if your data has extreme values, it is worth checking the median calculator too, to see whether the middle value tells a different story.
The mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. The calculator reads every number you enter, no matter how they are separated, adds them, and divides by the count. It also shows the range from smallest to largest.
For 12, 18, 7, 25, and 9, the sum is 71 and the count is 5, so the mean is 71 divided by 5, which is 14.2.
