How do I calculate an average?

Add up all the numbers and divide by how many there are. That gives the mean, the most common kind of average. Paste or type your numbers separated by commas or spaces and the calculator does it instantly.

What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?

The mean is the total divided by the count. The median is the middle value when sorted. The mode is the most frequent value. They can differ a lot when the data has outliers, so the mean is best for evenly spread numbers.

How it works

The mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. The calculator reads every number you enter, no matter how they are separated, adds them, and divides by the count. It also shows the range from smallest to largest.

Worked example

For 12, 18, 7, 25, and 9, the sum is 71 and the count is 5, so the mean is 71 divided by 5, which is 14.2.
