This calculator works out how many New Zealand standard drinks are in any beer, wine, spirit, RTD or cider, using the official NZ definition of one standard drink as 10 grams of pure alcohol. Enter the volume of your drink in millilitres, its alcohol by volume (ABV) percentage, and how many you are having, or click a quick preset for common options such as a 330ml beer can, a 150ml wine glass, a spirit shot or an RTD, and the fields fill in automatically. The calculator returns the total NZ standard drinks as its headline figure, along with the grams of pure alcohol consumed, the approximate calories that alcohol contributes, and what percentage of the weekly and single-occasion drinking guidelines your total represents. A verdict line states whether you are within or over the four-drink single-occasion guideline. Because bar and restaurant servings are often larger than a standard measure, and because countries define a standard drink differently, entering the actual volume and ABV from the label gives a more accurate picture than guessing. Use the result alongside the NZ low-risk drinking guidelines shown on the page: no more than 10 standard drinks a week, no more than 4 on any occasion, and at least 2 alcohol-free days. | Country | Grams of Pure Alcohol |
|---|---|
| New Zealand | 10g |
| Australia | 10g |
| United Kingdom | 8g (1 unit) |
| United States | 14g |
| Canada | 13.6g |
| Japan | 19.75g |
| WHO recommendation | 10g |
Standard drinks = Volume (mL) x ABV (as a decimal fraction) x 0.789 (density of ethanol kg/L) / 10 (grams per NZ standard drink).
Example: 330ml can of 5% beer = 330 x 0.05 x 0.789 / 10 = 1.30 standard drinks.
