What is included in an estate?

Your estate is everything you own less what you owe: property, savings, KiwiSaver, investments, vehicles and possessions, minus mortgages and other debts. Some assets, like jointly owned property, may pass outside the estate.

Why work out my estate value?

Knowing your net estate helps with making a will, planning how it is shared, and understanding what your family would inherit. It is a useful starting point for estate planning conversations.

Is there inheritance tax in New Zealand?

New Zealand has no inheritance or estate tax. Estate planning is mainly about a clear will, how assets are owned, and avoiding disputes, rather than tax.

New Zealand has no inheritance or estate tax. Some assets, such as jointly owned property, may pass outside the estate to a survivor. This is an estimate for planning; a clear, current will and good advice are the key to estate planning.

How it works

The calculator adds your assets, property, savings, KiwiSaver, investments, vehicles and other, then subtracts your mortgage and other debts to give your net estate value. It also shows an example of splitting the estate three ways, to illustrate how it might be shared. Remember some assets can pass outside the estate, and the figures are a planning estimate rather than a formal valuation.

Worked example

Assets of $800,000 property, $40,000 savings, $90,000 KiwiSaver, $60,000 investments and $35,000 of vehicles total $1,025,000. Less a $250,000 mortgage and $15,000 of other debts, the net estate is $760,000, which split three ways is about $253,000 each.
