Inheritance Split Calculator

This calculator works out how much each beneficiary receives when an estate is divided in New Zealand, whether the will splits it equally or you simply want to see what an even share would look like. You enter the total estate value, any debts and costs to be paid first, such as funeral costs, loans or legal fees, any specific bequests taken off the top, such as a set sum or an item left to a named person, and the number of beneficiaries sharing what is left. The calculator subtracts the debts and bequests from the estate value to find the residue, then divides that residue equally among the beneficiaries. It returns the amount each beneficiary receives, the residue available to share, and a note confirming how many ways it has been split. Use it to check how debts and specific gifts affect the final amount each person gets, to compare scenarios before a will is finalised, or to have a clearer, fairer conversation with family about what a distribution might look like. New Zealand has no inheritance tax, so nothing is deducted for tax here. This tool assumes an equal split of the residue; if a will sets unequal shares, adjust the figures accordingly. It is a planning illustration only, not a substitute for a valid will and proper legal advice, which actually determine how an estate is distributed.

How it works

The calculator takes the estate value, subtracts the debts and costs and any specific bequests that are paid first, and the remainder is the residue. It divides the residue equally among the beneficiaries to show each share. In a real estate the will may set unequal shares, but an equal split is a common and useful starting point for planning and conversations.

Worked example

An estate of $760,000 with $20,000 of debts and costs and a $10,000 specific bequest leaves a residue of $730,000. Shared equally among 3 beneficiaries, that is about $243,333 each.
