Separation Asset Split Calculator

This New Zealand calculator gives an indicative split of relationship property on separation, based on the general equal-sharing principle. You enter the shared assets and debts, and it shows a 50/50 starting point and each person share, with a strong prompt to get legal advice, helping people understand the broad shape of a split.

As a general principle, relationship property is shared equally, but there are important exceptions for separate property, short relationships and other factors. This is an indicative starting point only. Relationship property is complex, so get legal advice for your situation.

How it works

The calculator adds the shared assets, the family home, savings, investments and chattels, then subtracts the shared debts to find the net relationship property. It divides that equally to show each partner share, reflecting the general equal-sharing principle for relationship property. Real outcomes depend on what counts as relationship versus separate property and other factors, so this is a starting point, not a determination.

Worked example

A family home of $800,000, $80,000 of savings and $50,000 of chattels is $930,000 of assets. Less $300,000 of shared debt, the net relationship property is $630,000, so an equal split is about $315,000 each, before considering any separate property or exceptions.
