This calculator tells you which calendar quarter a given date falls in and the exact start and end dates of that quarter, a small but genuinely useful tool for anyone working to quarterly deadlines in New Zealand. The year divides neatly into four quarters of three months: the first quarter runs January to March, the second April to June, the third July to September, and the fourth October to December, and a surprising amount of business and tax life is organised around them. GST returns are commonly filed on a quarterly basis, provisional tax has quarter-aligned instalments, and reporting, budgets and performance reviews are routinely set by quarter, so being able to pin down the precise dates of the quarter that contains any given date saves flicking through a calendar. You enter a date, and the calculator returns the quarter it belongs to, from Q1 to Q4, along with the first and last day of that quarter. Use it to set reporting cut-offs, to work out which GST period a transaction belongs in, or to plan around quarter ends. One thing to keep in mind: the standard New Zealand tax year runs from the first of April to the end of March, so its quarters are offset by three months from the calendar quarters shown here. The calculator takes the month of your date and works out the quarter as the month divided into groups of three: January to March is Q1, and so on. The quarter start is the first day of the first month of that group, and the quarter end is the last day of the third month.
A date of 15 August falls in the third quarter, Q3, which starts on 1 July and ends on 30 September.
