Electricity Prices Across New Zealand

Electricity prices in New Zealand vary significantly by region. The MBIE Quarterly Survey of Domestic Electricity Prices (QSDEP) is the official government benchmark, surveying publicly advertised retail tariffs across 40+ towns and cities. The prices below are based on a modelled household using 8,000 kWh per year (approximately 22 kWh per day) on a standard tariff including GST.

Approximately one-third of your power bill is made up of lines charges (the cost of distributing electricity from the generation source to your home via poles, wires, and substations). You cannot choose your lines company as it is determined by your physical address. The remaining two-thirds covers energy generation, retailer margin, metering, and GST.

How to Reduce Your Power Bill

Understanding Your Power Bill

Your power bill has two main components: a variable charge based on the kWh of electricity you use (the per-unit rate), and a daily fixed charge that covers your connection to the network regardless of how much power you use. Some plans offer lower fixed charges with higher per-unit rates (better for low users) and others offer higher fixed charges with lower per-unit rates (better for high users). Since the low-user tariff was removed in 2022, all consumers are on standard pricing structures, though many retailers still offer plan choices.
