This calculator estimates how much you could save on heating by insulating your New Zealand home, and how long the insulation takes to pay for itself. Ceiling and underfloor insulation are among the cheapest energy-efficiency upgrades available, because a poorly insulated home loses most of its heat through the roof and floor, so even a modest install can cut a power bill noticeably. You enter three figures: the insulation install cost, your annual heating cost, and the percentage you expect the insulation to reduce that heating cost by. The calculator returns the payback period, the dollar saving per year, and the total saved over 15 years, so you can weigh the upfront cost against the ongoing benefit. Use it to compare installer quotes, or to see whether ceiling-only or ceiling-and-underfloor insulation makes more financial sense for your home. A typical previously uninsulated home might see heating savings of 10% to 30%, though the real figure depends on your climate, how many hours you heat for, and how much insulation you already have. Beyond the money, a well-insulated home is warmer, drier and healthier to live in, and ceiling and underfloor insulation, where practical, is required in New Zealand rental properties under the Healthy Homes Standards. These figures are an indicative estimate only, not an engineering assessment of your specific home.
Ceiling and underfloor insulation give most of the saving for the least cost. Beyond the dollars, a warmer, drier home is healthier and is required for rentals under the Healthy Homes Standards. Estimate only.
The calculator applies the heating-saving percentage to your annual heating cost for the yearly dollar saving, then divides the install cost by it for the payback. Insulation is usually the best-value efficiency upgrade because it is cheap relative to the heat it retains, so the payback is often just a few years, and the comfort gain is immediate.
On a $1,600 heating bill, a 20% saving is $320 a year. A $3,000 install pays back in around 9 years on energy alone, saving about $4,800 over 15 years, plus a warmer, drier home the whole time.
