New Zealand does not have a statutory requirement for overtime pay rates. Unlike some countries, there is no law requiring time-and-a-half for hours worked beyond 40 per week. Overtime rates are determined by your employment agreement, collective agreement, or workplace policy.
The only statutory premium rate is time-and-a-half for working on a public holiday (Holidays Act 2003), plus an alternative day off.
| Situation | Common Rate | Required by Law? |
|---|---|---|
| Hours over 40/week | Time-and-a-half (1.5x) | No (agreement only) |
| Saturday work | Time-and-a-quarter (1.25x) | No (agreement only) |
| Sunday work | Time-and-a-half (1.5x) | No (agreement only) |
| Night shift | Time-and-a-quarter to time-and-a-half | No (agreement only) |
| Public holiday | Time-and-a-half (1.5x) + alt day | Yes (Holidays Act 2003) |
| Double-time | 2x normal rate | No (agreement only) |

This calculator shows gross pay before tax. Overtime rates depend entirely on your employment agreement. Only public holiday time-and-a-half is required by law.
