NZ Overtime Pay Calculator

Quick answer At $30 an hour, a 40-hour week plus 5 hours at time-and-a-half pays $1,425.00: $1,200 of normal time, $225 of overtime, of which $75 is the overtime premium. NZ law does not require overtime rates; they come from your agreement.

This calculator works out exactly what your overtime is worth in dollar terms, whether your employment agreement pays time-and-a-half, double-time, time-and-a-quarter, or a mix of penal rates for weekends and unsociable hours. Enter your normal gross hourly rate and your usual weekly hours, then add the hours you worked at each overtime rate: time-and-a-half (1.5x) for standard overtime, double-time (2x) for the highest penal rate, and time-and-a-quarter (1.25x), the rate commonly paid for Saturday work. The calculator instantly returns your normal pay for standard hours, your total overtime pay across all penal rates, your combined total weekly pay, and the overtime premium, the extra amount you earn above what those same hours would pay at your normal rate. A rate comparison table breaks down the hourly value of each multiplier side by side, and a plain-English summary spells out the maths behind your result. Remember that New Zealand has no general law requiring overtime pay; time-and-a-half, double-time and penal rates only apply if they are written into your employment agreement or collective agreement. The one exception is working on a public holiday, where time-and-a-half plus an alternative day off is required under the Holidays Act 2003. Figures shown are gross, before tax and other deductions, so use them as an indicative guide to your pay, not a final payslip figure.

Overtime Pay in New Zealand

New Zealand does not have a statutory requirement for overtime pay rates. Unlike some countries, there is no law requiring time-and-a-half for hours worked beyond 40 per week. Overtime rates are determined by your employment agreement, collective agreement, or workplace policy.

The only statutory premium rate is time-and-a-half for working on a public holiday (Holidays Act 2003), plus an alternative day off.
