University Year Cost Calculator

This calculator adds up the full cost of a year at university in New Zealand, bringing tuition fees, accommodation, living costs and one-off expenses together so students and families can budget honestly before, and during, study. The fees that appear on an enrolment offer are only part of the picture, and they are often the smaller part. Tuition for a domestic undergraduate year is typically several thousand dollars after the fees-free and student loan arrangements, but the cost of actually living while you study, rent or hall fees, food, power and internet, transport, phone, course materials and the occasional textbook or device, usually dwarfs the tuition over a 30-something week academic year. Underestimating this is the single biggest cause of student financial stress, and it is why so many students end up working long hours or relying on overdrafts. This tool helps you see the whole number. You enter your annual tuition, the number of weeks in your study year, your weekly accommodation and living costs, and any one-off expenses such as a laptop, course gear or a bond, and the calculator returns the total cost for the year, broken into tuition, accommodation, living and one-offs, plus a weekly figure across the year. Use it to set a realistic budget, to work out how much you need from a student loan, allowance, savings or part-time work, and to compare living at home against flatting or halls. Pair it with the StudyLink allowance and student loan tools to see what support you can draw on. Costs vary widely by city and lifestyle, so use your own figures for the most accurate result; this is a planning estimate.

How it works

The total adds your annual tuition, your accommodation and living costs multiplied by the number of weeks in the study year, and any one-off costs. The per-week figure spreads the whole-year total across 52 weeks so you can see the ongoing cost of being a student.

Worked example

With $7,000 of tuition, a 30 week study year, $250 a week accommodation and $180 a week living costs, plus $1,500 of one-offs, the total is about $21,400. Accommodation comes to $7,500 and living to $5,400 over the 30 weeks. Across the full year that is roughly $412 a week.
