This calculator finds the four headline measures of a data set, the mean, median, mode and range, along with the count, sum and the smallest and largest values, all from a single list of numbers. These are the everyday tools of descriptive statistics, and each tells you something different about your data. The mean is the average, found by adding the values and dividing by how many there are, and it is the most familiar measure of the centre, though it can be pulled around by very high or very low values. The median is the middle value once the numbers are sorted, which makes it a more robust measure of the centre for skewed data such as house prices or incomes, where a few large figures would distort the mean. The mode is the value that appears most often, useful for spotting the most common result, and a data set can have more than one mode or none at all. The range, the gap between the largest and smallest, is the simplest measure of spread. You enter your numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, and the calculator works out every measure at once. It is ideal for schoolwork, marking, surveys and quick analysis. The calculator reads your numbers, then adds them for the sum and divides by the count for the mean. It sorts them to find the median, the middle value, or the average of the two middle values when the count is even. It tallies how often each value appears for the mode, and subtracts the smallest from the largest for the range.
For 4, 8, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, the sum is 116 and the count is 7, so the mean is about 16.57. The median is the fourth value, 15. The mode is 8, the only repeated value. The range is 42 minus 4, which is 38.
