This calculator works out the real annual cost of schooling a child in New Zealand, adding up the expenses that sit alongside free state education. Although tuition itself is free, most families still pay a school donation, uniform items, stationery and books, a device or tech contribution, trips and camps, sport and other activities, plus a catch-all for anything else that comes up during the year. You enter your own figures for each category per child, along with the number of children in the household, and the calculator instantly totals them into an estimated yearly cost, a per-child figure, and a per-week amount that makes budgeting easier. It is useful for setting up a school costs savings plan or seeing how quickly individually modest costs add up once uniforms, devices and camps land in the same term. Because school donations are voluntary and some schools do not request them, you can zero that field out if it does not apply, and because bigger items like devices and camps arrive in occasional lumps rather than evenly through the year, the per-week figure is best used as a guide for what to set aside regularly rather than what you will actually pay every week. Every school and family situation differs, so treat the result as a planning estimate to help you budget with your eyes open, not an exact bill.
School donations are voluntary, and some schools do not ask for them. Big items like devices and camps come in lumps, so setting aside a regular amount helps. Estimate only, to support your budget.
The calculator adds the cost categories you enter for one child, then multiplies by the number of children for the household total. It also shows the cost per child and per week. Although state schooling is free, the donations, uniforms, devices, trips and activities add up, so seeing the annual figure helps families plan and spread the lumpier costs.
Per child costs of $150 donation, $300 uniform, $150 stationery, $300 device, $250 trips, $400 activities and $200 other total $1,750. For two children that is $3,500 a year, about $67 a week, which is worth budgeting for in advance.
