School Zone Distance Calculator

This calculator measures the straight-line distance from your home to a school in New Zealand, along with rough walking and cycling times, using map coordinates. Distance to school is something families weigh up constantly, when choosing a home, deciding whether a child can walk or bike, or simply understanding how far away a school is, and a quick distance figure helps with all of these. You enter the latitude and longitude of your home and of the school, which you can read off any online map by right-clicking a location, and the calculator returns the as-the-crow-flies distance in kilometres, plus indicative walking and cycling times based on typical speeds. It is important to understand what this does and does not tell you. Many New Zealand schools have enrolment zones, also called home zones, which decide whether your address is entitled to enrol. Crucially, these zones are defined by specific street and boundary descriptions on the school's official zone map, not by a simple distance or radius from the school. A home can be close as the crow flies but outside the zone, or further away but inside it, because zones follow roads, suburbs and natural boundaries. So while this tool is useful for understanding travel distance and planning walking or biking, it cannot tell you whether an address is in zone. For that, always check the school's official enrolment zone, which is published by the school and on the Ministry of Education's information, and confirm directly with the school. Straight-line distance also understates real travel distance by road, which is longer. Treat this as a handy distance estimate, not an enrolment decision.

1.4 km
straight-line distance home to school
Walking time~17 min
Cycling time~6 min
By road (approx)~1.8 km

Straight-line distance only. Enrolment zones are defined by boundary maps, not distance, so check the school's official zone. Road distance is longer.

How it works

The distance uses the haversine formula, which calculates the great-circle distance between two points on the Earth from their latitude and longitude. Walking time assumes about 5 kilometres an hour and cycling about 15 kilometres an hour. The approximate road distance adds around 30 percent to the straight line, since roads rarely run direct.

Worked example

With a home at latitude -36.8485, longitude 174.7633 and a school at -36.86, 174.77, the straight-line distance is about 1.4 kilometres. That is roughly a 17 minute walk or a 6 minute cycle, and perhaps 1.8 kilometres by road. Whether the home is in the school's enrolment zone, though, depends on the official zone map, not this distance.
