Walking Steps to Distance Calculator

This calculator converts your step count into the distance you have walked in New Zealand, using your stride length, and gives an approximate idea of the calories burned. Step counters and phones happily tell you how many steps you have taken, but steps alone do not tell you how far you have actually gone, because that depends on the length of each stride, which differs from person to person with height and walking pace. Turning steps into kilometres makes the number meaningful, lets you compare days, and helps you plan toward distance goals rather than just a step target. The conversion is simple: multiply your steps by your stride length, and with stride measured in metres, divide by a thousand for kilometres. You enter your number of steps and your stride length, and the calculator returns the distance walked in kilometres and an approximate calorie figure. An average walking stride is around 0.76 metres, but for a more accurate result, measure a known distance, count your steps over it, and divide to find your own stride. The calorie estimate uses a rough figure of about 0.04 calories per step, so it is indicative only and varies with your weight, pace and the terrain. A handy way to make sense of your daily steps.

How it works

The distance in metres is your number of steps times your stride length in metres. Dividing by 1,000 gives kilometres. The approximate calories use a rough figure of 0.04 calories per step, which is indicative only.

Worked example

Walking 10,000 steps with a 0.76 metre stride covers 7,600 metres, or about 7.6 kilometres, burning roughly 400 calories on the rough per-step estimate.
