Running Split Time Calculator

This calculator works out the pace per kilometre and the speed you need to hit a target finish time over a given distance, the number every runner wants to know before a race or hard training session. Pace is the heartbeat of running: it is the time it takes to cover each kilometre, and holding a steady pace, known as running even splits, is one of the most reliable ways to reach a goal time without blowing up early. To plan a race you work backwards from the finish time you are chasing, dividing it by the distance to find the pace you must average on every kilometre, then you can check that pace on your watch at each split. You enter the distance in kilometres and your target finish time in hours, minutes and seconds, and the calculator returns the pace per kilometre in minutes and seconds, and your speed in kilometres per hour. Use it to set a realistic race plan, to pace your long runs, or to see what pace a personal best would require. Even splits suit most runners, while a slight negative split, running the second half a touch faster, is a classic way to finish strong. Adjust the distance and time to model different goals. A simple, accurate pace planner for your running.

How it works

Your total time in seconds is the hours, minutes and seconds combined. The pace per kilometre is that total time divided by the distance, shown in minutes and seconds. The speed in kilometres per hour is the distance divided by the time in hours.

Worked example

To run 10 kilometres in 50 minutes, the total time is 3,000 seconds, so the pace is 300 seconds, or 5 minutes, per kilometre, which is a speed of 12 kilometres per hour.
