Real Hourly Wage Calculator

This calculator works out what you genuinely earn per hour once the unpaid time and hidden costs of holding down a job are counted, a figure that is often well below your headline pay rate. Your payslip only tells part of the story: getting to and from work, preparing for the day, and paying for transport, parking or other job-related expenses all eat into the value of your time without ever showing up as a deduction. You enter your weekly take-home pay, your paid hours per week, the extra hours you spend on things like commuting and preparation, and your weekly work-related costs. The calculator subtracts those costs from your take-home pay, divides the result by your real hours worked, paid plus unpaid, and returns your true effective hourly wage alongside your headline hourly rate, your real hours per week, and how much you are losing per hour compared with the rate on paper. Use it to see whether a long commute, an unpaid lunch break, or the running costs of a job are quietly cutting into what you earn, and to compare job offers on a fairer, like-for-like basis rather than by the advertised rate alone. It is general information based on the figures you provide, not financial advice, so treat the result as a guide rather than an exact number.

Include only costs you have because of the job, like transport and parking, not costs you would have anyway. The result uses your take-home pay so it already reflects tax. General information, not financial advice.

How it works

The calculator takes your weekly take-home pay and subtracts your weekly work-related costs to find the money the job actually leaves you. It then divides that by the real hours the job consumes, which is your paid hours plus the unpaid hours spent commuting and preparing. The result is your true effective hourly wage. Comparing it with your headline hourly rate, your pay divided by paid hours only, shows how much your time is really worth once everything is counted.

Worked example

On $1,100 take-home a week for 40 paid hours, the headline rate is $27.50 an hour. Add 7 hours of commuting and $60 of work costs, and you are really giving the job 47 hours for $1,040, a true wage of about $22 an hour, well below the headline figure.
