Motorbike Running Cost Calculator NZ
This calculator works out the true yearly cost of running a motorbike in New Zealand, covering the ongoing costs that follow the purchase price. New riders often budget for buying the bike and forget how much it costs to keep on the road each year. You enter six figures: fuel, registration, insurance, tyres, servicing and WOF, and gear and other costs, all per year. The calculator adds these together and returns the total annual running cost, then shows a weekly figure so you can see what the bike costs you week to week, alongside the combined rego and insurance share, the fixed costs you pay whether you ride daily or rarely. This split matters because motorbike registration includes a significant ACC levy, reflecting the higher injury risk riders face, which is why rego alone can be a bigger cost than many expect. Tyres wear faster on a motorbike than a car, and gear such as a helmet, jacket and gloves is an easily forgotten ongoing cost rather than a one-off purchase. Use the tool to budget realistically, to compare the true cost of a motorbike against running a car, or to check whether your current spending matches what riding actually costs you. Figures are for planning purposes only and will vary with your bike, riding style, location and insurer, so treat the result as an estimate.
A large part of motorbike rego is the ACC levy. Tyres and gear can be ongoing costs riders forget. This is running cost only; add the purchase price or finance separately. Estimate only.
How it works
The calculator adds your yearly fuel, registration, insurance, tyres, servicing and gear into the total annual running cost, and shows it per week. It also flags the fixed share (rego and insurance) you pay whether you ride a lot or a little. Seeing the full picture helps you decide if a bike is genuinely cheaper than a car for your situation.
Worked example
With $900 fuel, $450 rego, $600 insurance, $400 tyres, $500 servicing and $300 gear, the total is about $3,150 a year, around $61 a week, before the cost of buying the bike.
