This calculator works out exactly how much rent is owed when payments have been missed or only partly made, giving both tenants and landlords in New Zealand a clear, shared figure to work from rather than a guess. You enter the rent amount, choose how often it falls due (weekly, fortnightly or monthly), enter the number of rent periods the arrears cover, and add up the total actually paid over that time. The calculator multiplies the rent by the number of periods to find the total rent due, subtracts what was actually paid, and returns the arrears owed, along with a breakdown showing the total rent due, the total paid, and how many periods behind the tenancy is running. If more has been paid than owed, it tells you rent is ahead rather than behind. This period count matters because tenancy processes and any Tenancy Tribunal application often refer to arrears in terms of weeks or periods rather than just a dollar figure. Use the result to open an honest conversation about a repayment plan, to check your own records line up, or to document the position clearly before things escalate. It is a calculation to help both sides agree on a number, not an official statement or legal advice, so keep your own records of rent due and every payment made alongside it.
This is a calculation to help both parties agree the figure, not an official statement. Keep your own records of rent due and every payment. For arrears, early communication and a repayment plan are best; the Tenancy Tribunal can help if it is not resolved. General information, not legal advice.
The total rent due is the rent amount multiplied by the number of rent periods over the timeframe. The arrears are that total minus the rent actually paid. The calculator also shows how many full rent periods the arrears represent, which is a useful measure because tenancy rules and Tribunal steps often refer to being a number of periods behind. A negative result would mean rent is paid ahead rather than behind.
At $550 a week over 8 weeks, the rent due is $4,400. If $3,300 was paid, the arrears are $1,100, which is two weeks of rent behind. Having this clear figure makes it far easier to agree a catch-up plan or to document the position accurately.
