Side Hustle GST Registration Calculator NZ

This calculator checks whether your side hustle has to register for GST in New Zealand by measuring your turnover against the sixty thousand dollar threshold. GST registration is compulsory once your turnover from a taxable activity exceeds sixty thousand dollars in any twelve-month period, or once you reasonably expect it to, and this catches out a lot of people whose side income quietly grows past the line without them noticing. It applies to ongoing activities run with the intention of making money, such as selling goods online, contracting, ridesharing or renting out short-stay accommodation, and the turnover counts even when the side hustle sits alongside a regular salaried job. You enter your average monthly revenue, and the calculator projects your annual turnover, tells you whether you must register, and shows how much headroom you have before you hit the threshold, or how far over it you already are. Use it to see whether registration has become compulsory and to plan ahead as your side hustle grows, since registering means adding GST to your prices and filing returns, but also lets you claim GST on your business costs. Below the threshold you can still register voluntarily if it suits you. This is general information, not tax advice; confirm your position with IRD.

Under the threshold: registration is optional
based on your projected 12-month turnover
Annual turnover$48,000
Headroom$12,000

Registration is compulsory above $60,000 of turnover in any 12 months, or when you expect to exceed it. You can register voluntarily below it. General information, not tax advice.

How it works

The projected annual turnover is your average monthly revenue times 12. The calculator compares it against the GST threshold of 60,000 dollars. At or below the threshold, registration is optional and it shows your headroom; above it, registration is compulsory and it shows how far over you are.

Worked example

Averaging 4,000 dollars a month projects to 48,000 dollars of turnover a year, which is 12,000 dollars under the 60,000 dollar threshold, so GST registration is optional for now. Lift revenue to 5,500 a month and you would cross the line and have to register.
