Temperature Converter
This calculator converts temperature between the three scales you are likely to come across: Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Enter a value into any one of the three boxes, Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin, and the other two update instantly, so there is no need to remember which formula to use or which direction to convert. New Zealand uses Celsius for weather forecasts, oven temperatures, and body temperature, while Fahrenheit still turns up in older recipes and American sources, and Kelvin is the scale used in science because it starts at absolute zero rather than the freezing point of water. Below the converter you will find the formulas used: Celsius to Fahrenheit multiplies by 9, divides by 5, and adds 32; Fahrenheit to Celsius subtracts 32, then multiplies by 5 and divides by 9; and Celsius to Kelvin simply adds 273.15. A reference section lists the common fixed points, water's freezing point at 0 Celsius, 32 Fahrenheit, and 273.15 Kelvin, and its boiling point at 100 Celsius, 212 Fahrenheit, and 373.15 Kelvin, along with a typical comfortable room temperature of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius. It is also worth knowing that Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal at exactly minus 40 degrees, the one point where both scales cross. Use this tool whenever you are reading a recipe, forecast, or scientific reading in an unfamiliar scale and need a quick conversion.
The formulas
- Celsius to Fahrenheit: C times 9 divided by 5, plus 32
- Fahrenheit to Celsius: F minus 32, times 5 divided by 9
- Celsius to Kelvin: C plus 273.15
Common reference points
Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius, 32 Fahrenheit, 273.15 Kelvin, and boils at 100 Celsius, 212 Fahrenheit, 373.15 Kelvin. A comfortable room is around 20 to 22 degrees Celsius.
