Deck or Fence Cost Calculator

This calculator gives you an all-in cost estimate for building a deck or a fence in New Zealand, bringing materials, labour, extras and a contingency together into a single realistic number. Decks and fences are two of the most popular home improvement projects, and both are quoted in very different ways, which makes budgeting confusing. A deck is usually priced per square metre of deck area, while a fence is priced per lineal metre of its length, and the rate swings widely depending on the materials and the site. A simple ground-level treated pine deck might be $350 to $500 a square metre supply and installed, while a hardwood or elevated deck with balustrades can be well over $700. A basic timber paling fence might run $150 to $300 a lineal metre, with retaining, gates or difficult access pushing it higher. You choose whether you are pricing a deck or a fence, enter the size in the right unit, set a supply-and-install rate, add any one-off extras such as a gate, steps, a building consent or tricky access, and choose a contingency to cover the surprises that almost every outdoor build throws up. The calculator returns the total estimated cost broken into the base build, your extras and the contingency, plus the cost per unit so you can sanity-check a quote. Use it to set a budget before you call a builder, to compare two quotes on a like-for-like basis, or to see whether a DIY approach is worth it. Rates vary by region and supplier, so treat this as a planning estimate and get firm quotes before you commit.

How it works

The base build is the size times your supply-and-install rate, so square metres for a deck or lineal metres for a fence. Extras are added on, then a contingency percentage is applied to the base plus extras. The per-unit figure divides the total by the size so you can compare against quotes that are priced per square metre or per metre.

Worked example

A 20 square metre treated pine deck at $350 a square metre is a $7,000 base build. Adding $500 for steps and a 10 percent contingency of $750 gives a total of about $8,250, which is roughly $413 a square metre all in. A 30 metre paling fence at $200 a metre would start from a $6,000 base before extras and contingency.
