Pergola & Carport Cost Calculator NZ 2026
This calculator estimates the cost to build a pergola, carport or louvre roof in New Zealand, three popular ways to add shade, shelter and value to an outdoor area. The price depends mostly on the structure type and the floor area it covers, plus whether you need a concrete pad underneath. A simple open timber pergola is the most affordable, providing a frame for shade or a climbing plant; a roofed carport adds a solid roof to keep a vehicle or outdoor space dry; and a powered louvre or opening roof sits at the top end, giving you control over sun and rain at a premium price. As a guide, an open pergola often runs a few hundred dollars a square metre supplied and installed, a roofed carport more, and a louvre roof system the most by a clear margin. On top of the structure, many builds need a new concrete pad or slab, and there are usually extras such as fixings to the house, guttering, lighting, and sometimes a building consent depending on size and location. You enter the floor area, choose the structure type, say whether a concrete pad is included, add any extras, and set a contingency, and the calculator returns the all-in estimated cost, the structure and pad components, and the cost per square metre. Use it to choose between the options, to budget before getting quotes, and to check whether a smaller footprint brings a louvre roof within reach. Rates vary by product, region and site, and consent requirements differ by council, so treat this as a planning estimate and confirm details locally.
Indicative rates supply and installed. A building consent may be required depending on size and council. An estimate; get quotes.
How it works
The structure cost is the floor area times the rate for the chosen type. If a concrete pad is included, the area times about $120 a square metre is added. Extras are added on, then a contingency is applied to the whole lot. The per square metre figure divides the total by the area.
Worked example
An 18 square metre roofed carport at $450 a square metre is $8,100. Adding a concrete pad at $120 a square metre, or $2,160, plus $500 of extras and a 10 percent contingency of about $1,076, gives a total of around $11,836, roughly $658 a square metre. Choosing an open pergola instead would drop the structure to $5,400.
