This calculator gives you a realistic budget to renovate a single room in New Zealand, which is how most home renovations are actually planned and paid for, one room at a time. Renovation costs vary enormously by room and by how far you take it, and the two rooms that dominate spending are the kitchen and the bathroom, because they involve plumbing, electrical work, waterproofing, cabinetry and appliances or fixtures, all of which add up quickly. A bedroom or living room is usually far cheaper, often just flooring, paint, lighting and maybe a built-in wardrobe. The other big driver is the quality level: a budget refresh using stock cabinetry and entry-level fittings can cost a fraction of a premium renovation with custom joinery, stone benchtops and designer tapware in the very same room. This tool starts from a typical base cost for the room you choose, then applies a quality multiplier and a contingency, because renovations almost always uncover something behind the walls. You select the room, choose budget, standard or premium quality, and set a contingency, and the calculator returns the estimated cost, the base figure, the quality adjustment and the contingency. Use it to set a per-room budget, to plan a staged renovation across several years, or to sanity-check a builder's or designer's quote before you commit. Renovation pricing is highly site-specific and regional, and structural changes, consents or moving services push costs well beyond a standard fit-out, so treat this as a planning estimate and get detailed quotes for the work you intend to do.
Indicative base costs for a typical fit-out. Structural work, consents and moving services add a lot. An estimate; get detailed quotes.
Each room has a typical base cost for a standard fit-out. That base is multiplied by the quality level, which scales it down for a budget job or up for a premium one. A contingency is then applied, because renovations frequently uncover hidden issues once walls and floors are opened up.
A standard bathroom renovation has a base of about $20,000. At standard quality the multiplier is 1.0, leaving $20,000, and a 15 percent contingency of $3,000 brings the total to about $23,000. Choosing premium quality at 1.6 times would lift the base to $32,000 before contingency, while a budget job at 0.7 would bring it to $14,000.
