Average residential electricity prices across New Zealand, in cents per kilowatt hour (c/kWh) including GST. MBIE surveys prices quarterly for a modelled household using around 8,000 kWh a year (about 22 kWh a day). Your bill is made up of a usage charge per kWh plus a daily fixed charge, and the total per-unit cost varies a lot by region and retailer.

Daily fixed chargeA set daily amount for being connected. "Low user" and "standard" plans trade off a lower fixed charge against a higher unit rate.

Ways to Pay Less

Switching retailer is the simplest saving and is free. Off-peak or time-of-use plans reward shifting load (hot water, EV charging, dishwasher) to cheaper hours. Prompt-payment discounts still apply with some retailers. Powerswitch, run by Consumer NZ, compares plans for your usage.
