This calculator estimates the cost to build a swimming pool in New Zealand, one of the largest discretionary projects a household can take on, where the final figure is often double the headline pool price once everything is included. The base cost depends on the pool type and size. A fibreglass pool, dropped in as a single moulded shell, is usually the quickest and most affordable in-ground option; a concrete pool, formed and sprayed on site, costs more but can be any shape and size; and small plunge pools sit somewhere in between on a per-square-metre basis. On top of the pool itself, New Zealand law requires compliant pool fencing, and most projects also involve excavation, craneage, paving or decking, landscaping, and the plant such as the pump, filter and heating, which together can rival the cost of the shell. You enter the water-surface area of the pool, choose the pool type to set a typical per-square-metre rate, add a figure for fencing, landscaping and plant, and choose a contingency, because pool builds are notorious for site surprises and access costs. The calculator returns the all-in estimate, the shell cost, your extras and the contingency, and the cost per square metre. Use it to test whether a pool is realistic for your budget, to compare fibreglass against concrete, or to see how a smaller pool changes the numbers. Pool fencing is a legal requirement in New Zealand, so never leave it out of the budget. Prices vary widely by product, site and region, so treat this as a planning estimate and get firm quotes from pool builders.
Compliant pool fencing is a legal requirement in NZ and must be budgeted. Indicative rates; site access can add a lot. An estimate; get quotes.
The shell cost is the pool surface area times the per-square-metre rate for the chosen type. Fencing, landscaping and plant are added as a combined figure, then a contingency is applied to the whole lot. The per square metre figure divides the total by the surface area for comparison.
A 32 square metre fibreglass pool at $1,500 a square metre is a $48,000 shell. Adding $12,000 for compliant fencing, paving and plant, and a 15 percent contingency of $9,000, gives a total of about $69,000, roughly $2,156 a square metre all in. The same size in concrete at $2,200 a square metre would lift the shell alone to about $70,400.
