How it works
The calculator adds your upfront costs to the ongoing yearly costs multiplied by the pet expected life, giving a whole-of-life total. Worked example
With $600 purchase, $700 setup, and ongoing costs of $900 food, $600 vet, $700 insurance and $400 other ($2,600 a year) over 13 years, the lifetime cost is about $35,100. The ongoing cost is $2,600 a year or $50 a week, far more than the purchase price alone suggests.
