NZ Grocery Budget Calculator

This calculator estimates how much your household should expect to spend on groceries each week, month and year in New Zealand, using per-person food cost benchmarks from the University of Otago Department of Human Nutrition food cost survey. You build your household by adding each person and choosing their age group (child, teenager, adult male, adult female or elderly), then set a spending level (basic, moderate or liberal), a dietary type (standard, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, organic or halal), and your region, since prices vary from Auckland and Wellington to rural and provincial areas. You can also add an allowance for non-food items like cleaning products and toiletries. The calculator returns your weekly food cost before adjustments, your adjusted weekly total once diet and regional pricing are applied, and the matching monthly and annual figures, plus a household breakdown showing each person's contribution and a comparison across all three spending levels, including the annual difference between basic and liberal budgets. Use it to check whether your grocery spending suits your household, see how changing diet type or spending level shifts your bill, or set a realistic weekly budget. These figures are indicative only, based on survey averages for home-prepared meals, and your actual costs will depend on where you shop, what you buy and your household's habits.
