This calculator works out how much ready lawn turf to order for your section, so you buy enough without paying for a large surplus. Enter the length and width of the area in metres, which are multiplied to find the lawn area, then add a waste allowance as a percentage to cover trimming around curved edges, garden beds and paths, since most lawns lose some turf to shaping. You also enter the size of one roll or slab in square metres, since suppliers sell ready lawn in different unit sizes. The results show the lawn area itself, the area to order once the waste allowance is added, and the number of rolls to buy, rounded up so you are never short. A waste allowance of around 5 to 10% suits most rectangular to gently curved lawns, though irregular shapes with lots of edging may need more. Check the roll or slab size with your supplier before ordering, as this varies between growers and garden centres, and using the wrong figure will throw off the rolls total even if the area is correct. Once your turf arrives, lay it as soon as possible and water it thoroughly, especially over the first couple of weeks, to help it root into the soil.
