This calculator works out the true one-off cost of moving to another city in New Zealand, adding up every expense so a relocation does not quietly blow your budget. You enter eight cost lines: movers and truck, bond on the new rental, rent paid in advance, travel and accommodation, connecting power and internet, cleaning the place you are leaving, setting up and replacing things, and any other costs. The calculator adds these into a total one-off cost of the move, then splits that figure two ways: the bond, which is returnable once your new tenancy ends, and the true cost, which is the total less the bond and represents money you will not see again. Because the bond can be a large chunk of the total, separating it out gives a more honest picture of what the move actually costs rather than just what you need in the bank on moving day. Use it before you commit to a move to check you have covered obvious costs like movers and less obvious ones like connection fees and cleaning, and to see how much of your outlay is temporary versus permanent. Figures are for planning only, so adjust each line to match your own quotes, and add a buffer for the unexpected costs that most moves throw up.
The bond is returnable at the end of the new tenancy, so the true cost of the move is the total less the bond. Decluttering and booking ahead can lower the movers. Estimate only.
The calculator adds every one-off cost of the move, the movers, bond, rent in advance, travel, connections, cleaning, setup and anything else, into a single total. Because the bond is returned at the end of the new tenancy, it also shows the true cost of the move as the total less the bond, which is the money you will not see again. Seeing it all together helps you save the right amount before you go.
Movers $2,500, bond $2,800, rent in advance $1,400, travel $600, connections $300, cleaning $350, setup $800 and $300 other total about $9,050. Since the $2,800 bond comes back later, the true cost of the move is around $6,250, with the bond a temporary cash-flow hit.
