Volume Calculator

This volume calculator works out the space inside the most common three dimensional shapes: a cube, a rectangular box, a sphere, a cylinder and a cone. Volume is the amount of space a solid takes up, measured in cubic units, and it is something people need to calculate far more often than school maths might suggest. Working out how much water a tank holds, how much concrete a footing needs, the capacity of a fish tank or a planter box, the air space in a room for heating, or the contents of a silo all come down to a volume calculation. You choose the shape, enter its dimensions in whatever unit suits you, and the calculator applies the correct formula and returns the volume in cubic units, along with the equivalent in litres, since 1000 cubic centimetres make a litre and a cubic metre is 1000 litres. The formulas differ by shape: a box multiplies its three sides, a cylinder uses pi times the radius squared times the height, a cone is a third of that, and a sphere is four thirds pi times the radius cubed. Keep all your dimensions in the same unit for a correct answer. Choose a shape and enter the measurements to see the volume instantly.

If units are cm0.79 L
If units are m785.4 m³

Keep all dimensions in the same unit. The litre figure assumes centimetres; the cubic metre figure assumes metres. Estimate only.

How it works

The calculator applies the standard formula for the chosen shape. Cube is side cubed. Box is length times width times height. Sphere is four thirds pi times radius cubed. Cylinder is pi times radius squared times height. Cone is one third of the cylinder formula. The answer is in cubic units of whatever you entered.

Worked example

A cylinder with a radius of 5 and a height of 10 has a volume of pi times 25 times 10, which is about 785.4 cubic units. If those were centimetres, that is about 0.79 of a litre.
