What are the two ways to claim vehicle expenses in New Zealand?
The actual cost method claims a share of what the vehicle genuinely costs you, including fuel, servicing, tyres, registration, insurance, repairs and depreciation, apportioned by the business use percentage from a logbook. The kilometre rate method claims a set amount per business kilometre using rates Inland Revenue publishes each year, with a higher tier one rate for an initial band of kilometres and a lower tier two rate beyond it. You choose one method per vehicle, and the choice generally applies for as long as you own it.
Which method gives the bigger claim?
It depends on how expensive the vehicle is to run and how far you drive for business. The actual cost method tends to win for expensive vehicles with high fixed costs and a high business use percentage, because depreciation and insurance are claimed in proportion regardless of distance. The kilometre rate tends to win for cheap, efficient vehicles driven a long way, because the rate is paid per kilometre whatever the vehicle actually costs. Running both, which is what this calculator does, is the only reliable way to know.
Do I still need a logbook if I use the kilometre rate?
Yes. You need evidence of the business kilometres you are claiming whichever method you use. A logbook covering a representative period of at least 90 consecutive days establishes a business use percentage that can then be applied for up to three years, provided your usage pattern does not change materially. Without records, neither method is defensible if your return is reviewed.
Why are there two tiers in the kilometre rate?
The tier one rate covers both the fixed costs of owning a vehicle and the running costs, so it applies only to an initial band of kilometres each year. Beyond that band the fixed costs are treated as already recovered, and the lower tier two rate covers running costs alone. This is why the average rate per kilometre falls as business distance rises, and why very high mileage makes the actual cost method more competitive than the headline tier one rate suggests.
Can I switch methods later?
The choice is generally made when you start claiming for a vehicle and applies while you hold it, so it is worth getting right at the outset rather than assuming it can be revisited. If your circumstances change substantially, or you replace the vehicle, the position should be reconsidered. Confirm the rules that apply to your situation with Inland Revenue or your accountant before switching.

What is a number base?
A number base, also called a radix, is the number of distinct digits a system uses to represent values. Decimal is base 10 and uses the digits 0 to 9. Binary is base 2 and uses only 0 and 1. Octal is base 8 and hexadecimal is base 16, which adds the letters A to F to represent the values 10 to 15.
How do I convert binary to decimal?
Each binary digit represents a power of two, doubling from right to left: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on. Add up the place values where the digit is 1. For example 1111 1111 in binary is 128 + 64 + 32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1, which is 255 in decimal.
Why does hexadecimal use letters?
Hexadecimal is base 16, so it needs sixteen distinct digits. The digits 0 to 9 cover the first ten values, and the letters A, B, C, D, E and F represent the values 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. This lets a single character stand for four binary digits, which is why hexadecimal is common in computing.
What is the largest number this converter handles?
Results are reliable for whole numbers up to two to the power of 53, which is the largest integer that can be represented exactly. Above that, rounding can make a conversion inaccurate.

How do I convert px to rem?
Divide the pixel value by the base font size. With the common default base of 16 pixels, 16px is 1rem, 24px is 1.5rem, and 8px is 0.5rem. Change the base font size in the converter to match your own root font size.
What is the difference between em and rem?
Both are relative to a font size. A rem is always relative to the root font size, while an em is relative to the font size of the current element. This converter treats both as relative to the base font size you enter, so they give the same pixel value here.
How many pixels is 1pt?
In CSS, 1 point is 1.3333 pixels, because a point is one seventy-second of an inch and CSS assumes 96 pixels per inch. So 12pt is 16px and 9pt is 12px at 96 dpi.
What does percent mean for a CSS length here?
Percent in CSS is always relative to something, and that reference depends on the property. In this converter, percent is treated as a share of the base font size, so 100% equals the base, 50% is half the base, and 200% is double the base.

What is the difference between US and UK gallons per minute?

What is field efficiency?
Field efficiency is the share of working time actually spent covering new ground. Turning at the headlands, overlapping passes, refilling sprayers or seed boxes and clearing blockages all eat into it. Typical values are 70 to 90 percent, with mowing and cultivating near the top of that range and spraying or drilling with frequent refills near the bottom.
How many acres can a tractor cover in an hour?
