Density Converter
Density is a material property that describes how much mass is packed into a given volume. It appears in almost every branch of engineering and physical science: fluid mechanics uses it to calculate buoyancy and pressure, materials science uses it to compare structural materials by weight, chemistry uses it to convert between mass and volume when dispensing liquids, and food science uses it to measure concentrations and specific gravity. The SI unit is kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³), but several other units remain in common use. Grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm³) is numerically equal to grams per millilitre and is the standard unit for liquids in laboratory and chemistry contexts. Water has a density of exactly 1 g/cm³ at 4 degrees Celsius, which makes it a convenient reference. Kilograms per litre (kg/L) is also 1 for water, since 1 litre equals 1 cubic decimetre equals 0.001 m³. In the United States and some older engineering literature, density is quoted in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) or pounds per US gallon (lb/gal), and occasionally in ounces per cubic inch (oz/in³) for metals and dense materials. How it works
All conversions use kg/m³ as the base unit. Conversion factors to kg/m³: 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³; 1 kg/L = 1000 kg/m³; 1 lb/ft³ = 16.01846 kg/m³; 1 lb/gal (US) = 119.8264 kg/m³; 1 oz/in³ = 1729.994 kg/m³. The input value is converted to kg/m³ first, then divided by each factor to produce the other units.
Worked example
Convert 1 g/cm³ to all units. 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³. Divided by 1000 = 1.0000 kg/L. Divided by 16.01846 = 62.43 lb/ft³. Divided by 119.8264 = 8.345 lb/gal (US). Divided by 1729.994 = 0.57804 oz/in³. These are the reference density values for water and match the default output in the calculator above.
