CCF to Gallons Conversion

This calculator converts between CCF (hundred cubic feet) and US gallons, the units New Zealanders most often meet when reading a water or gas bill from a US utility, working out consumption for an American property, or converting a figure quoted by a US-based supplier or family member. You enter either a CCF figure or a US gallons figure, and choose how many decimal places you want; the calculator instantly fills in the other field, since the two inputs are linked and each recalculates from whichever one you last changed. The result tiles show your figure converted to US gallons, CCF, cubic feet and litres, while the breakdown box beneath adds imperial UK gallons and cubic metres, plus the exact multiplier of 748.052 US gallons per CCF. A quick reference table lists common CCF amounts from 0.5 through to 100 so you can scan typical bill readings without touching the inputs, and a worked example walks through the maths using the default value of 5 CCF. Because CCF is a US-only billing unit built from 100 cubic feet, while New Zealand utilities bill in cubic metres and litres, this tool is handy for anyone dealing with American paperwork or comparing usage across countries. All conversions use exact NIST and SI definitions, so figures are mathematically precise rather than rounded estimates, to whatever number of decimal places you select.

Worked Example

Input: 5 CCF (the default)

Step 1: Convert CCF to cubic feet: 5 x 100 = 500 ft³

Step 2: Convert cubic feet to US gallons: 500 x 7.48052 = 3,740.260 US gallons

Step 3: Convert to litres: 500 x 28.316847 = 14,158.423 litres

Result: 5 CCF = 3,740.260 US gallons = 14,158.423 litres

What is CCF?

CCF stands for hundred cubic feet. The "C" comes from the Latin and Roman numeral for 100 (centum). It is a volumetric unit commonly used by water and gas utilities in the United States to bill customers for consumption. When you see CCF on a water bill, it means the number of hundred-cubic-foot units of water you have used.

One CCF contains exactly 100 cubic feet of volume. Because cubic feet are a relatively large unit, CCF provides a practical billing unit for household consumption. An average US household uses roughly 8 to 12 CCF of water per month.

CCF to Gallons Formula

The conversion factor from CCF to US gallons is derived from the exact definition of these units:

To convert CCF to US gallons, multiply the CCF value by 748.052. To go the other way, divide the number of gallons by 748.052 to get CCF.

CCF on a Water Bill

Water utilities that bill in CCF measure consumption using a water meter that records volume in cubic feet. The meter reading difference between billing periods is divided by 100 to get CCF. For example, if your meter goes from 5,230 to 5,245 cubic feet, you used 15 cubic feet (0.15 CCF) in that period, equal to about 112.2 US gallons.

Some utilities bill in HCF (hundred cubic feet), which is the same unit as CCF. You may also see MCF on gas bills, which stands for thousand cubic feet (1 MCF = 10 CCF = 7,480.52 gallons).

CCF and Gas Billing

Natural gas is also measured and billed in CCF in the US. However, for gas the energy content (BTU or therms) matters more than volume alone, because gas density can vary. Utilities typically convert CCF of gas to therms for billing purposes. One therm equals approximately 100,000 BTU. One CCF of natural gas contains roughly 1.02 therms, though this varies slightly with gas composition and altitude.
