Convert pressure from bar to PSI (pounds per square inch) instantly. Enter a value in bar or PSI and get the result in the other unit. The exact conversion factor is 1 bar = 14.5038 PSI.
Commonly used for tyre pressures, hydraulic systems, gas cylinders, and industrial equipment. The reference table below covers the most frequently searched values.
| Bar | PSI | kPa | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 7.25 | 50 | Low pressure / partial vacuum |
| 1.0 | 14.50 | 100 | Reference pressure |
| 1.013 | 14.69 | 101.3 | 1 standard atmosphere (sea level) |
| 2.0 | 29.01 | 200 | Car tyre (lower end) |
| 2.2 | 31.91 | 220 | Typical passenger car tyre |
| 2.5 | 36.26 | 250 | Car tyre (upper end) |
| 2.8 | 40.61 | 280 | SUV / van tyre |
| 3.0 | 43.51 | 300 | Light truck / commercial vehicle tyre |
| 5.0 | 72.52 | 500 | Hydraulic systems (low pressure) |
| 8.0 | 116.03 | 800 | Road bicycle tyre |
| 10 | 145.04 | 1,000 | Compressed air lines |
| 200 | 2,900.75 | 20,000 | High-pressure gas cylinder |
The conversion from bar to PSI uses a single multiplication:
PSI = bar x 14.503773773
For most practical purposes, using 14.5038 is accurate to four decimal places. For tyre pressures, rounding to two decimal places is sufficient.
To convert PSI back to bar, divide by the same factor:
bar = PSI / 14.503773773
Both bar and PSI are units of pressure, meaning force per unit area. The underlying SI unit is the pascal (Pa), defined as one newton per square metre.
The factor 14.5038 is an approximation rounded to four decimal places. For engineering calculations requiring greater precision, use the full factor of 14.503773773022.
New Zealand and most of the world outside the United States uses bar for tyre pressures. American manufacturers and some tools still quote PSI. If your car manual says 2.2 bar and your gauge reads in PSI, the correct setting is approximately 31.9 PSI.
| Bar | PSI (approx) | Typical vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| 1.9 bar | 27.6 PSI | Some small cars (spare tyre) |
| 2.0 bar | 29.0 PSI | Smaller passenger cars |
| 2.2 bar | 31.9 PSI | Common for sedans and hatchbacks |
| 2.4 bar | 34.8 PSI | Larger cars, SUVs |
| 2.6 bar | 37.7 PSI | Heavier SUVs and wagons |
| 2.8 bar | 40.6 PSI | Vans and light commercial vehicles |
Always use the pressure stated on the vehicle's tyre placard (inside the driver's door jamb or in the owner's manual) rather than the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall.
Convert the default input of 1 bar to PSI (matching the calculator's default output with 2 decimal places):
A second common example: 2.2 bar (a typical car tyre pressure) = 2.2 x 14.5038 = 31.91 PSI.
Sources and method: Conversion factor derived from NIST Special Publication 811 (2008), which defines 1 pound-force per square inch = 6,894.757 Pa and 1 bar = 100,000 Pa (exact). The PSI value 14.503773773022 is the quotient 100,000 / 6,894.757.
