NZ Car Insurance Calculator 2026

How much does car insurance cost in NZ?

For a 35-year-old in Auckland with a $20,000 vehicle, 5+ years no-claims, and $500 excess: comprehensive costs approximately $780-$1,000/year, third party fire and theft costs $280-$430/year, and third party only costs $160-$250/year. Younger drivers (under 25) pay 70-150% more. Wellington and Auckland are the most expensive locations. Rural areas are the cheapest. Vehicle value is the biggest single factor for comprehensive cover.

What is the difference between comprehensive and third party car insurance?

Comprehensive covers damage to your vehicle AND damage you cause to others, plus theft, fire, weather, and vandalism. Third party fire and theft covers damage you cause to others plus fire and theft of your vehicle, but NOT your own accident damage. Third party only covers damage you cause to others only, with no cover for your own vehicle. Comprehensive is recommended for vehicles worth more than $5,000. Third party only suits older, low-value vehicles where the premium would exceed the vehicle's worth.

How does the no-claims bonus work in NZ?

Most NZ car insurers reward claim-free years with premium discounts. After 5+ claim-free years, you can receive up to 35% discount on your premium. Making a claim typically resets or reduces your bonus. Some insurers offer excess-free windscreen claims and protected no-claims bonus (for an additional premium) that preserves your discount after a first claim. The discount applies to the base premium before other loadings.

Why do young drivers pay more for car insurance?

Drivers under 25 pay significantly higher premiums because they are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents. Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) crash statistics consistently show drivers aged 15-24 are over-represented in crash data relative to their share of the driving population. Insurance premiums for under-25s are typically 70-150% higher than for 30-50 year olds. Named driver policies (restricting who can drive) can reduce this loading.

Is car insurance compulsory in New Zealand?

No. Unlike many countries, car insurance is NOT legally required in New Zealand. ACC covers personal injury from car accidents (funded by levies on fuel and vehicle registration). However, ACC does NOT cover vehicle damage, property damage you cause to others, or your own vehicle damage. If you cause an accident and are uninsured, you are personally liable for all damage to the other party's vehicle and property. Third party cover (at minimum) is strongly recommended to protect against this liability.

What does commuting cost per kilometre in New Zealand?

Inland Revenue sets kilometre rates that represent the full cost of running a vehicle. For the 2025-26 income year the tier one rate is $1.20 a kilometre for petrol, $1.30 for diesel, $0.90 for a petrol hybrid and $1.22 for electric, covering the first 14,000 kilometres. Above that, tier two rates of 37, 38, 24 and 23 cents apply, because the fixed costs of the vehicle are treated as already recovered.

Can I claim my commute on tax in New Zealand?

No. Travel between home and work is private travel, not business travel, so it is not deductible. This is why a longer commute has to be paid out of after-tax income, and why a pay rise has to be substantially larger than the extra travel cost to be worth taking.

How many hours a year does a commute take?

A half-hour trip each way, five days a week for 46 working weeks, is 230 hours a year, close to six working weeks of unpaid time. An hour each way is 460 hours, or about eleven and a half working weeks.

Is fuel most of what a commute costs?

No, usually less than a third of it. The rest is depreciation, servicing, tyres, insurance and registration, which a car consumes whether it is moving or not. Judging a commute by the fuel gauge understates it by roughly three times.

Does switching to the bus save the whole cost of driving?

Only if you would otherwise not own the car. If the car stays in the driveway for weekends and other trips, switching your commute saves the marginal running cost of those trips rather than the whole cost of the vehicle, which is roughly a third as much.

Population Within a Distance Calculator NZ

How many people live within 10 km of central Auckland?

About 611,000 people in 2025, based on the Stats NZ modelled population grid measured from the centre of the Queen Street statistical area. Within 5 km it is about 173,000 and within 30 km about 1.68 million. These are straight-line distances, so the 10 km figure includes places across the Waitematā Harbour that are considerably further by road.

Are these figures counted people or estimates?

They are modelled estimates, not people counted. Stats NZ distributes its population estimates across a grid of one kilometre cells, and the values are fractional: a cell can hold 2.24 people. That is different from the Census, which counts. The estimates are reliable across a large area and get less reliable the smaller the area, which is why this calculator refuses to answer for a radius under two kilometres.

Why will it not show a figure for a small radius?

The grid has one kilometre cells, so a circle with a one kilometre radius covers about three of them. A single modelled cell would then be a third of the answer, and the figure would reflect how the model spread the population rather than who lives there. Below two kilometres, or fewer than eight contributing cells, no figure is shown.

Is this a drive time or a straight line?

A straight line, measured between grid cell centres. Road distance is longer, and where a harbour, a river or a range sits in the way it can be several times longer. A 10 km circle drawn on central Auckland or central Wellington includes a great deal of water and hillside that no road crosses.

Where does the population data come from?

The Stats NZ population grid, published through the Stats NZ geographic data service, at one kilometre resolution with estimates for 2022 through 2025. Summed across the whole country the 2025 cells come to about 5.33 million, which matches the published national population estimate.

NZ RUC Calculator 2026

How much are road user charges for an electric vehicle in NZ?

The RUC rate for light electric vehicles (under 3,500 kg) in New Zealand is $76.00 per 1,000 km (including GST). This is the same rate as light diesel vehicles. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) that use both petrol and electricity pay a reduced rate of $38.00 per 1,000 km because they also pay fuel excise duty when buying petrol. Standard (non-plug-in) petrol hybrids do not pay RUC as they pay fuel excise at the pump. An admin fee of $12.44 applies per online transaction, or $13.71 at an agent.

How often do I need to buy RUC?

You must buy RUC before your odometer exceeds the distance covered by your current licence. RUC is purchased in blocks of 1,000 km with no maximum. Since an admin fee applies to each transaction ($12.44 online), buying in larger blocks (such as 5,000 or 10,000 km) reduces your effective cost per kilometre. For example, buying 1,000 km costs $88.44 total ($76.00 + $12.44), which is 8.84c/km. Buying 10,000 km costs $772.44 ($760.00 + $12.44), which is 7.72c/km.

How does RUC compare to petrol tax?

Petrol vehicles pay approximately 70 cents per litre in fuel excise duty (plus GST and other levies). For a typical petrol car averaging 8 litres per 100 km, this works out to approximately $5.60 per 100 km in road tax. An EV or diesel vehicle paying RUC at $76 per 1,000 km pays $7.60 per 100 km. However, EV owners save significantly on fuel costs overall: charging an EV at home costs roughly 3 to 5 cents per km versus 12 to 18 cents per km for petrol, even after adding RUC.

What happens to unused RUC if I sell my vehicle?

Unused RUC distance stays with the vehicle when it is sold. The new owner benefits from the remaining distance already paid for. Many sellers advertise the remaining RUC as a selling point (for example, 'RUC paid to 150,000 km'). You cannot transfer RUC between vehicles. If you want a refund for unused RUC, you can apply to NZTA, but there are conditions and it is generally simpler to let the unused distance transfer with the vehicle.

Do I need a WoF if my RUC is overdue?

Yes, you still need a Warrant of Fitness (WoF). However, mechanics check your RUC label during inspection and may flag that your RUC has expired. While an overdue RUC does not automatically fail a WoF, driving without valid RUC is an offence that can result in an infringement fee. You should always ensure your RUC is current before the odometer exceeds the distance on your label. You can buy RUC online in minutes at nzta.govt.nz.

How much does travel insurance cost from NZ?

For a 30-year-old travelling to Europe for 2 weeks on comprehensive cover, expect approximately $130-$180. USA trips cost 30-40% more due to high US medical costs. A one-week trip to Australia or the Pacific is the cheapest at around $70-$100 comprehensive. Family policies typically save 40% compared to buying individual policies. Medical-only cover (no baggage or cancellation) is roughly half the price of comprehensive.

Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Most NZ travel insurers exclude pre-existing medical conditions unless you declare them and they are accepted (which may attract an additional premium loading). Southern Cross Travel Insurance allows you to apply for pre-existing condition cover. World Nomads automatically covers some common conditions. Always declare pre-existing conditions honestly; failure to do so can void your entire policy if you need to claim.

Why is USA travel insurance more expensive?

US medical costs are extraordinarily high by international standards. A simple hospital admission in the US can cost $10,000-$50,000+. An emergency surgery or ICU stay can reach $100,000-$500,000+. Medical evacuation from the US to NZ costs $50,000-$150,000. Because of these costs, insurers charge 30-40% more for policies covering the USA. Unlimited medical cover (offered by Southern Cross) is strongly recommended for US travel.

Do I need travel insurance for Australia from NZ?

Yes. While the NZ-Australia reciprocal health agreement provides some access to Australian public hospitals for emergency treatment, it does NOT cover ambulance costs (which can be $1,000-$5,000+ in most Australian states), medical evacuation back to NZ, trip cancellation, lost baggage, or non-emergency specialist care. Medical evacuation from remote Australian locations can cost $50,000+. Travel insurance is strongly recommended even for short Australian trips.

Can I claim my commute as a tax deduction in New Zealand?

No. Travel between home and work is private travel, not business travel, so it is not deductible and no employer reimbursement of it is tax free by default. The IRD kilometre rates exist to reimburse business travel. This calculator uses them for a different purpose, as an official and annually maintained estimate of what a kilometre costs to drive.

Should I include the time my commute takes?

Time is shown separately as hours a year, because it is a real cost that is not money. If you want it in dollars you can supply your own hourly value and the calculator will show that figure alongside the cash cost, never added into it. Adding an assumed hourly rate to measured costs produces a total that looks precise and is largely made up.

How many weeks a year should I use?

Most full-time employees in New Zealand work about 46 weeks a year once four weeks of annual leave and eleven public holidays are taken out. Using 52 overstates a commute cost by roughly 12 percent. The calculator defaults to 46 and you can change it.

How much extra salary do I need to cover a longer commute?

Enough that the after-tax increase exceeds the extra travel cost. Because a pay rise is taxed and a travel cost is not deductible, the gross rise has to be noticeably larger than the extra cost. At a 33 percent marginal rate, an extra $2,000 a year of travel needs about $2,985 of extra gross salary just to break even, before counting any of the extra hours.

Is commuting to a new job tax deductible in New Zealand?

No. Travel between home and work is private travel and is not deductible, whichever job it is for. That is why a longer commute has to be paid for out of after-tax income, and why the gross pay rise needed to cover it is larger than the cost itself.

Should the extra hours count in the decision?

They are shown separately, as extra hours a year and as an effective hourly rate on the time the new job costs you. An hour spent commuting is unpaid, so a rise that looks good annually can be poor once spread over the additional time. The calculator reports that rate rather than converting your hours to dollars at a number we invented.

What marginal tax rate should I use?

The rate that applies to the top of your income, not your average rate. For most New Zealand earners that is 30 percent between $48,000 and $78,100, 33 percent between $78,100 and $180,000, and 39 percent above that. The calculator defaults to 33 percent and you can change it.

What is the formula for average speed?

Average speed equals distance divided by time. Divide the total distance travelled by the total time taken, making sure both are in compatible units. The result tells you how much distance is covered per unit of time.

How do I convert metres per second to kilometres per hour?

Multiply metres per second by 3.6 to get kilometres per hour, because there are 3,600 seconds in an hour and 1,000 metres in a kilometre. For example, 10 metres per second is 36 kilometres per hour.

How fast is one knot?

One knot is one nautical mile per hour, which is 1.852 kilometres per hour or about 0.514 metres per second. Knots are used for speed at sea and in aviation.

Does this calculate average or instantaneous speed?

It calculates average speed over the whole trip, which is total distance divided by total time. It does not measure how fast you were going at any single instant, which can be higher or lower than the average.

Arrow Speed Calculator

How is arrow speed estimated from the IBO rating?

The IBO speed is measured at a 30 inch draw, 70 pound draw weight and a 350 grain arrow. This calculator adjusts from that baseline: about plus or minus 10 fps for each inch of draw length, plus or minus 2 fps for each pound of draw weight, and minus 1 fps for every 3 grains of arrow weight above 350, plus a further deduction for weight added to the string. These are the widely used rules of thumb.

How accurate is the estimate?

It is a good ballpark, usually within a few fps of a real reading, but not exact. Cam efficiency, let-off, string and cable condition, arrow spine, fletching and nick fit all shift the true speed. The only way to know your real arrow speed is to shoot through a chronograph.

What is a safe minimum arrow weight?

Most manufacturers set a floor of about 5 grains of total arrow weight per pound of draw weight, so a 70 pound bow should shoot at least around 350 grains. Shooting lighter than the rated minimum can damage the bow and void the warranty, so keep the arrow at or above 5 grains per pound.

How do you work out audiobook listening time at a faster speed?

Divide the audiobook length by the playback speed. A 12 hour 30 minute book at 1.5x takes 12.5 hours divided by 1.5, which is about 8 hours 20 minutes. The time saved is the original length minus that figure, so 4 hours 10 minutes in this example.

Does listening at higher speed change the total time linearly?

Yes. Playback speed scales the running time directly: 2x halves it, 1.25x cuts it to four fifths, and 3x reduces it to a third. Comprehension is the real limit, not the maths, so most listeners settle between 1.25x and 2x depending on the narration.

What playback speed should I use for audiobooks?

Start at 1x and nudge the speed up in small steps until the narration feels quick but still clear. Many regular listeners are comfortable around 1.5x, while dense or technical books are easier at 1.1x to 1.25x. Fiction with lively narration can often go faster.

How do you calculate bike speed from cadence?

Multiply the gear ratio (chainring teeth divided by sprocket teeth) by the wheel circumference to get the metres you travel per pedal revolution, then multiply by your cadence in revolutions per minute and by 60 to get metres per hour, and divide by 1000 for kilometres per hour. At 90 rpm in a 50/15 gear on a 2111 mm wheel that is about 38 km/h.

What is a good cycling cadence?

Most road cyclists pedal comfortably at 80 to 100 revolutions per minute, with 90 rpm a common target for steady riding. A higher cadence in an easier gear reduces the force on your legs and knees, while a lower cadence in a harder gear puts more load on the muscles. The best cadence is the one you can sustain without straining.

What wheel circumference should I use?

Use the rolling circumference of your wheel and tyre in millimetres. A 700x25c road wheel is about 2111 mm, a 700x28c is about 2136 mm, and a 26 inch mountain bike wheel is about 2070 mm. For the most accurate result, measure your own rollout by marking the tyre, rolling one full turn, and measuring the distance.

How is a bike EMI calculated?

EMI (equated monthly instalment) is calculated using the standard reducing-balance loan formula: EMI = P x r x (1+r)^n divided by ((1+r)^n - 1), where P is the principal loan amount (bike price minus deposit), r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12), and n is the loan term in months. This means each repayment covers a portion of interest on the outstanding balance plus a portion of the principal. As the balance reduces each month, the interest portion shrinks and more of each payment goes toward the principal.

What interest rate should I expect on a motorcycle loan in NZ?

Motorcycle and e-bike loan rates in New Zealand typically range from around 8% to 20% per annum depending on the lender, your credit history, and whether the loan is secured or unsecured. Dealer finance may offer promotional rates (sometimes as low as 0% for short terms) but often only for new bikes. Credit unions and banks generally offer competitive secured personal loan rates. Finance companies tend to charge higher rates for lower credit scores or used bike purchases. Always compare the total cost of the loan (EMI multiplied by the number of payments) rather than just the monthly repayment amount.

Is it better to take a shorter or longer loan term for a bike?

A shorter loan term means a higher monthly EMI but significantly less total interest paid over the life of the loan. A longer term reduces the monthly repayment but increases the total interest cost. For example, a $10,000 loan at 12% p.a. over 36 months costs roughly $1,957 in total interest. The same loan over 60 months costs roughly $3,347 in total interest. As a general guide, aim for the shortest term whose monthly repayment is comfortably affordable within your budget. Also consider whether the bike may depreciate faster than the loan balance reduces, which can leave you owing more than the bike is worth.

What are gear inches on a bike?

Gear inches is the diameter in inches of the wheel a penny farthing would need to give the same gearing, worked out as the gear ratio times the wheel diameter in inches. A higher number is a harder, faster gear and a lower number is an easier climbing gear. Road bikes typically run from about 30 gear inches in the lowest gear to over 100 in the highest.

How is a bike gear ratio calculated?

The gear ratio is the number of teeth on the front chainring divided by the number of teeth on the rear sprocket. A 50 tooth chainring with a 15 tooth sprocket gives a ratio of 3.33, meaning the rear wheel turns 3.33 times for every full turn of the pedals.

What is development or rollout?

Development, also called rollout, is the distance the bike travels for one full turn of the pedals. It equals the gear ratio times the wheel circumference. It is often the most intuitive way to compare gears because it is measured directly in metres, so a 7 metre gear moves you 7 metres per pedal stroke.

How do you calculate cycling pace?

Average speed is the distance divided by the time. Pace is the reverse, the time taken per unit of distance. For a 40 km ride in 1 hour 30 minutes, the speed is 40 / 1.5 = 26.67 km/h, and the pace is 90 minutes / 40 km = 2.25 minutes per km, which is 2 minutes 15 seconds per km.

Is cycling measured in speed or pace?

Cyclists usually talk in speed, kilometres or miles per hour, rather than pace, because riders cover ground quickly and speed is easier to read on a bike computer. Runners tend to use pace, minutes per km. This calculator gives you both so you can compare rides or line a ride up against a run or swim.

What is a good average cycling speed?

A casual rider on flat ground averages around 15 to 20 km/h, a fit recreational cyclist 20 to 28 km/h, and a strong club rider 28 to 35 km/h on the flat. Hills, wind, traffic and stops all pull the average down, so a ride with climbing will show a slower average than the same distance on the flat.

How do I work out my bike frame size?

Measure your inseam, the distance from the floor to your crotch, in centimetres. For a road bike, multiply it by 0.665 to get the frame size in cm. For a hybrid, multiply by 0.685, and for a mountain bike multiply by 0.226 to get the frame size in inches. An inseam of 80 cm gives a road frame of about 53 cm.

How do you measure your inseam for a bike?

Stand with your back to a wall, feet about 15 to 20 cm apart, and no shoes on. Place a book between your legs and pull it up firmly against your crotch as a saddle would sit, then measure from the top of the book down to the floor. That distance in centimetres is your cycling inseam.

What saddle height should I set?

A common starting point is the LeMond method: multiply your inseam in centimetres by 0.883 to get the saddle height measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. For an 80 cm inseam that is about 70.6 cm. Fine-tune from there for comfort and a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

What is hull speed?

Hull speed is the theoretical top speed of a displacement boat, the point where the wave the hull makes is as long as the hull itself and pushing faster takes a steep jump in power. It is estimated as 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length in feet, giving a speed in knots.

Why use waterline length and not overall length?

Hull speed depends on the length of hull actually in the water, because that sets the length of the bow and stern waves. Overhangs at the bow and stern add to the overall length but do not carry the wave, so the waterline length is the figure that matters.

Can a boat go faster than hull speed?

Yes. Planing hulls, multihulls and light racing boats can climb over their own bow wave and exceed hull speed, and even heavy cruisers surf faster down waves. Hull speed is a guide to the efficient cruising limit of a typical displacement hull, not a hard barrier.

It depends on the campsite, distance and group size, but camping is generally cheap compared with other holidays. Once you add site fees, fuel, food and activities, this calculator gives you a tailored total and the cost per person for your trip.

How can I camp more cheaply?

Department of Conservation campsites and freedom camping areas are far cheaper than holiday parks, often just a few dollars a night or free, though with fewer facilities. Self-catering rather than eating out, and carpooling to share fuel, also cut the cost, which you can test here.

How do I split costs fairly in a group?

This calculator divides the total trip cost evenly by the number of people. For uneven splits, such as where some drive or bring gear, work out the total here and then use a ratio splitter to divide it according to each person's agreed share.

How much car can I afford?

Work backwards from the monthly amount you can spare, set aside the running costs (fuel, insurance, rego, maintenance), and use what is left for finance repayments. That repayment, plus your deposit, sets the car price you can afford without straining your budget.

Why include running costs?

A car is not just the purchase price. Fuel, insurance, registration, warrants and maintenance often add a few thousand dollars a year. Budgeting only for the loan repayment leaves you short on the true cost of ownership.

Should I buy with cash or finance?

Paying cash avoids interest, which is the cheapest way to own a car. If you finance, a larger deposit and a shorter term reduce the interest. This calculator includes a deposit and finance to show what fits your monthly budget.

Agreed vs Market Value Car Insurance Calculator NZ

What is the difference between agreed and market value?

Agreed value pays a set amount you and the insurer fix when the policy starts, regardless of later depreciation. Market value pays what the car is worth at the time of the claim, which the insurer determines and which falls as the car ages.

Which is better?

Agreed value gives certainty and usually a higher payout on a write-off, but the premium is often a little higher. Market value can be cheaper and is common for older cars where the values are close.

Does market value drop over the year?

Yes. A car insured for market value is worth less at the end of the policy year than the start, so a claim late in the year may pay noticeably less than you expect.

Car Crash Calculator

How do you calculate the force of a car crash?

The average force equals the mass of the car times its deceleration, and the deceleration is the impact speed squared divided by twice the crumple distance. A 1,500 kg car hitting a wall at 50 km/h and stopping over half a metre experiences an average force of about 289 kilonewtons.

Why does the crumple zone matter?

A longer crumple distance spreads the same change in speed over more space and time, which lowers the deceleration and therefore the force on the occupants. Doubling the distance the car takes to stop roughly halves the impact force, which is why modern cars are designed to fold up on purpose.

How many g is a serious crash?

Everyday braking is well under 1 g. A crash can reach tens of g in a fraction of a second: the example of a 50 km/h impact stopping in half a metre is close to 20 g. Survivable crashes with modern restraints can briefly exceed that, but injury risk climbs quickly with the peak g-force.

What does it cost to own a caravan a year?

Beyond the purchase, a caravan costs registration, insurance, warrant, storage if you cannot keep it at home, servicing and the running costs of trips. Divided by the trips you take, a lightly used caravan can be expensive per holiday.

Is owning a caravan cheaper than renting?

It depends how often you use it. A caravan used many weekends a year can be good value; one used a few times can cost more per trip than hiring. Working out the cost per trip is the honest comparison.

What about storage?

If you cannot store a caravan at home, paid storage can be a significant yearly cost. Include it, as it applies whether or not you use the caravan.

What does the cash conversion cycle measure?

It measures the number of days between paying for inventory and collecting cash from the resulting sales. A shorter cycle frees up cash faster. A longer cycle ties up more working capital in the business.
